Meet a Wedding Cake Designer in London, England: Cakes by Robin

Today’s wedding cake designer interview is with Robin of Cakes by Robin, based in London, England! Enjoy:

Tell us about your company and how you got started.

I started Cakes by Robin when I got made redundant from a banking job in the City in 2008. I decided that it was the perfect opportunity to follow my dream of owning my own cake company. I paid for my first website with two weddings cakes and got some dummy cakes professionally shot so that it looked like I had been doing it for years! I started the business from my 1 bedroom flat which we quickly grew out of and moved into a commercial premises in Southfields.

Today’s cake designer interview is with Tia of Miss Cupcakes based in London, England! Enjoy:

Tell us about your company and how you got started.

Miss Cupcakes offers a bespoke cake service throughout London. All our cakes are made to order using only the freshest and finest premium ingredients. Miss Cupcakes was founded in 2010. For many years I was baking cakes for friends and family birthdays as I really enjoyed the creative and imaginative aspect of it, and baking cakes and cupcakes for loved ones. I used to get a real sense of satisfaction when I received great feedback and recommendations, and referrals grew to the point where I knew I wanted to give it a real go full time as my main source of income. It took a big push from friends and family to take the plunge to set up Miss Cupcakes and I’m really glad I did!

Get to Know a Wedding Bakery: Elegantly Iced (4)

Today’s wedding bakery interview is with Lindsey of Elegantly Iced, based in New York! Enjoy:

Tell us about your company and how you got started.

My company, Elegantly Iced, makes unique, custom cakes. I specialize in sugar sculpture, trying to get every detail on the cake as realistic as possible, working hand-in-hand with my clients to create a completely unique cake for their event.

I have always been interested in the arts, and was a pastry chef for years. Knowing that I wanted to eventually work in cakes, I began teaching myself flowers and things of that sort for cakes. This led to me making cakes for friends and family, then the restaurants I worked in, until I decided to turn my attention to cake only. After a few years as the GM for 2 decorators here in NY, I decided it was finally time for me to start my own company.

Get to Know a Wedding Bakery: Sweet on Cake (5)

Our second bakery interview ever is with Amber of Sweet on Cake, based in Napa, California! Enjoy:

Tell us about your company and how you got started.

I took an indirect path to get where I am today. I worked as a newspaper editor right out of college and quickly realized it wasn’t right for me, so I decided to go to culinary school to pursue my longtime hobby of baking in a more serious way. I knew I wanted to make wedding cakes, and got my first job out of culinary school at a high-end wedding cake bakery. After two years at the bakery, I returned to journalism (had to pay off those student loans!), working as an editor at a wine magazine. While I was sitting in my cubicle back in 2009, I got a call from Food Network asking me to be on their popular TV series Food Network Challenge. I felt the stars had aligned, so I quit my job and started Sweet on Cake, and I haven’t looked back since.

Get to Know a Wedding Bakery: Krumbs Cakes (2)

In honor of our wedding bakery directory launching, we’re interviewing our first wedding bakery! Meet Christian of Krumbs Cakes, based in San Rafael, California. Enjoy!

Tell us about your company and how you got started.

At a young age, Christian discovered his love for cooking (and eating) the wonderful array of fresh pastries. He used to help his grandmother in the kitchen make strudels and cakes. Okay, so he helped more with the eating than the cooking, but it was here that he started to take a special interest in the sweeter things life had to offer.

Christian’s training took him all over Austria, learning from some of the top pastry chefs, such as three time world champion Dietmar Patzl. Once he had finished his apprenticeship, he worked in five star hotels and award winning restaurants throughout Austria.

With a strong desire to broaden his experience and skills in other cuisines, Christian took a position on a five star luxury cruise line, Windstar. He traveled the world and discovered new and exciting foods and cuisines.

Christian’s travels led him to San Francisco, where he met his wife-to-be, Taira. After several glasses of wine, and maybe a Jägermeister or two, he decided to stay. Oh yeah, and that’s where Taira lived too. They now reside in the beautiful County of Marin.

Christian is now doing what he has always loved to do since he was young boy wearing Lederhosen and licking the bowl at his grandmother’s house: making cakes — sharing his passion and talents with others!

And that’s how Krumbs Cakes was born.
