How did you get into hair and makeup for weddings?
Weddings are a fantastic professional avenue for a makeup artist. My other areas of work include print, film, runway and FX. However: for me wedding makeup is a special favorite in my field because it’s nature is so personal. As an artist nothing is as wonderful or satisfying as being allowed to be part of the process a bride undergoes as she prepares herself for the next phase of her life. It’s a big deal and a big day. I feel privileged to be included in the close circle of family and friends who are readying the bride for her wedding. That type of warmth and intimacy doesn’t exist in other kinds of hair and makeup work.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
Very simply: My favorite part of the job is helping a bride realize her vision of herself on her wedding day. I love being given the opportunity to help her day go smoothly.
What do you tell clients who aren’t sure they need a hair and makeup artist for their wedding day?
Frequently a bride who is makeup savvy and follows trends will plan to do her hair and makeup herself. What many of these daring brides find is that as the timeline of the wedding shapes up there is just no time for it. I can’t tell you how many last minute calls I get from frantic brides desperately looking for an artist. At the other end of the spectrum are the brides who, “are just not makeup girls“ which, I totally understand. Me either. I urge them to keep in mind that it isn’t every day that a woman puts on a gorgeous gown to be worn in a beautiful venue surrounded by all of her loved ones who have come out especially to celebrate her. Imagine our favorite actresses walking the red carpet in a beautiful dress- with no makeup and hair just falling limp around her face. Even the most natural looking faces have a little strategically placed makeup giving the illusion of a totally fresh face. Brides get so lost in planning the timeline, the music, the venue, the food that they underestimate their role in the event as the leading lady!
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
Wait…. Are there activities not related to work? Just kidding! I’m a dancer and a mom, but I must admit to being makeup obsessed.
What is your current favorite hair and makeup wedding styles?
I love the recent return to structure and formal lines in both wedding dresses and clean, simple but impactful hair and makeup. It has a mid-century flare which I find so… feminine and classy. Utterly Glamorous.
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
We’ve established I love polished and structured. If the messy side bun disappeared forever I wouldn’t shed a tear. Having said that: some brides make it look amazing. So much of wedding fashion and fashion generally is personal preference and confidence, so really, how could any of it be wrong?
