How did you get into wedding planning?
I actually started planning events when I was undergrad at The University of North Florida. For two years, I was the President of our Student Council for Exceptional Children chapter where we raised awareness for persons with special needs and disabilities. As a club we would have a special gala every semester where we would invite area housing or non-profit groups that worked along side persons with disabilities to come, dance, have a good time, and just interact with the students at UNF. The best event was our “Snowball” where we had Ballroom Dance Teachers come and lead a class during gala! It was a hit!
What’s your favorite part of the job?
My favorite part of being a wedding planner is finding out about the couple. I know many people may say that is when they walk down the aisle or leave at the end of the night – but I love getting to know why the couple chose each other and how they are going to incorporate their love into their wedding day.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?
Get everything in writing. If you are providing something gratis, send an invoice and show that you are giving it to them. Don’t leave anything to the imagination, if you have a question and don’t know the answer, don’t be too proud to ask.
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
My first love is Musical Theater. I am a season-ticket holder for the different Broadway touring shows that come to Jacksonville. Going to dinner theaters, community theaters, and other performances really inspire me! Other than that, I love to garden. I have herbs, roses, and succulents.
Any great stories from working with a client?
Dairing Brides are some of the coolest girls I know. They are so diverse and come from so many different backgrounds; I have had yogis, roller derby girls, actresses, opera singers, and NFL Cheerleaders! Each one teaches me something new not only about my industry, but about myself. There are so many funny stories – I don’t really know how to pick between the Furries Convention outside the reception venue or the time where a guest was dancing on the sweetheart table and the FOB licked her leg.
What is your current favorite color combination?
I am a sucker for anything and everything NAVY! Gold, Peaches, Corals, and Navy is a killer combo and makes for a stunning weddingscape.
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
I have a love/hate relationship with Mason Jars and Burlap. What I try to explain to my brides is while it is super cute, trendy, and all of the above – using burlap and mason jars dates your wedding. A Dairing Bride should have a timeless wedding. Your decor should not be trendy, it should be a representation of the love, hobbies, or interests of the two people who are getting married.
