Today’s wedding stationer interview is with Kate of Pickett’s Press, based in New York, NY! Enjoy:
How did you get started doing wedding invitations?
I started my company in 2008 BECAUSE of a wedding! I always loved custom illustration and had drawn my wedding map by hand, and a girlfriend remembered it and commissioned me to do her wedding… everyone loved it and Pickett’s Press was born from that!

What is your favorite color combination?
Honestly, I love the beauty of letterpress printing- put any two colors together on press and when paired with an old fashioned press and cotton paper, they look gorgeous. I like unusual combinations. We did a save the date in gray and bright yellow and it was amazing- but not what I would have chosen in the beginning.
What is the most unique invitation you have designed?
Early on when I started the company, we did a gorgeous wedding suite for a wedding at Williams college- we drew the chapel, and the gate house at the field, and I just loved how personal it all was to the couple, as they met and got engaged there. My favorite weddings have a custom element like that, to this day.
Do you have a favorite typeface?
I am fickle- I seem to switch monthly, right now I love the classic look of Sackers Gothic Light
What is the most bizarre request you have received?
I wouldn’t say bizarre as much as special, but I drew a custom beagle with an engagement ring tied around his neck, because that is how the groom proposed, for the couples save the date. It was so unique and I love projects that are custom for each wedding.
Ampersand or the word “and?”
Depends on the font- with Chevalier, I love Amersand, with a french script or a bickham, I love the word itself
Any advice for brides?
Follow your heart, and don’t listen to all the many opinions which will come your way… I let myself get talked into navy blue beach towels in all of our out of town guest totes and they looked like hotel towels! And, on the same subject, no one but me even remembers now- so remember, despite all the annoying details, all that matters is family and friends, and the people who love you all being together.

Do you offer more than just stationery?
YES – we offer monogrammed cups, napkins , plates, out of town guest gifts- many things to carry on theme of your wedding through the event itself.
