Today’s wedding florist interview is with Stacy K Ercan of Stacy K Floral, based in Rochester, NY! Enjoy:
Tell us about yourself and your company.
I was very lucky to stumble upon this career early on thanks to a career placement exam and LOVE what I get to do every day. I love design, color, being a bit different than the traditional florist. I obtained a business admin degree with a focus in marketing and this allowed me to see the fun of design used in all elements of business. I love logos, and stationary, and textures, and fonts, as well as all things floral and décor. When I decided to branch out into a retail store and not focus primarily on weddings I wanted to bring something fresh and new to the table……our industry is changing so much and I wanted to grasp the change by using social media, and consistently work on getting works published, blog, and understanding the importance of the internet in today’s business as a florist. Stacy K Floral began as a wedding and event florist only and then in 2010 we expanded into a specialty boutique and daily floral delivery studio as well. Weddings are still our favorite but now we have some much more stuff to play with and ideas to include in our work by having an inventory to pull from.

How did you get into wedding florals?
I was working as a florist and was asked to create the floral for a very good friend’s wedding on my own. From that wedding, my style was definitely noticed. I then booked 6 weddings the following year. The year after that there were 12 weddings, and the year after that 36….. It came to the point where I had to quit my full time job in order to be able to work on events full time. I created a studio that wasn’t open to the public and focused on just weddings and special events. It was such an exciting start!!
What is your favorite part about being a florist?
That’s a tough question. I would have to say the flowers and the people are a pretty even tie. My favorite moments of being a florist are any first look with a client, the first moment with a bouquet, the first time seeing the room after it’s all set. I tear up 9 times out of ten when I get to see the wonderful reactions that a client can gives and knowing that we helped make that moment.
Any great stories from working with a client?
All our clients are great and each has its own story it would take days to tell them all. J Some of the most memorable moments, if we had to narrow something down, would probably stem from when clients come to us and give our team complete creative freedom. We have so much fun taking just specific colors and brainstorming new and exciting concepts for couples that trust us completely to design for them!!
What is your favorite flower and why?
I love them all because that’s what I do J Lately I’ve been increasingly drawn to seasonal fragrant flowers that have come in and out of our studio. From lilac to wisteria, genestra to yummy garden roses….. The sweet subtle floral scents are unmistakable and so incredibly lovely!! Nothing beats walking into your home and experiencing that beautiful soft aroma, even when you are around flowers all day long.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding florists just getting started?
Take your time. If you want to be successful and make an impact in your industry and community, you have to make carefully contemplated decisions. Success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time and effort. Marketing is key. Spend the effort to create your brand. Play with it and make it your own. If you want to be noticed, you can’t just be content with looking like you were extracted from a cookie-cutter mold. Find your own niche and pour all your heart and soul into it. Go above and beyond what is expected of you. And most importantly – have fun!! ….if it’s not fun anymore it will show in your art.
What are you favorite trends when it comes to wedding flowers?
The textures and color and unique elements that you are seeing so much of these days. People are becoming less afraid to be adventurous and utilize elements that you would never expect to see in this industry. Being bold and wanting something that no one has ever had before.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are ordering their wedding flowers?
The more insight about your day, your themes, your colors, your loves, the more helpful it is for your florist to dream up the perfect customized idea for you. We like to get a feel for what the couple’s overall vision is in order to create that complete ambiance that they are looking for.
