Today’s wedding photographer interview is with Bartek Witek Photography, based in Ireland! Enjoy:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company
Hi my name is Bartek but everyone calls me Bart. I have always found interest in colours, imagery, art and above all else people. For a big part of my life I was working as a sound engineer and this gave me the opportunity to spend some time with biggest bands, touring Europe and meeting lots of diverse people. I have some great memories of this stage of my life and recognise that through this experience my interest in preserving memories on photographs began.
Now based in Kerry, Ireland since 2005 with my beautiful wife Beata and daughters – Maya and Victoria we have built our home. I feel lucky to have such a wonderful family and that I have made a career out of something I love.
How did you get into wedding photography?
I have been photographing kids and families for some time when this first couple came over and ask me to shot their wedding. I was very sceptical and scared. Did not wanted to do it but eventually went for it. From this moment I was hooked.
What an honour it is to be invited to witness and capture wonderful moments between a couple in love amongst their families and friends. Real and fleeting moments- captured to be enjoyed forever and shared by generations.
What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?
This is a difficult question as it is different with every wedding. But I really like the toast/speeches part of the day. The shaky hands holding the microphone, nervousness in the voice, unique personal stories that lead the couple to each other’s arms, tears in the eyes, hugs, kisses and all of this within such a short space of time.
What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?
When a tipsy wedding band singer invited the bride and her father (who had passed away) to dance. Imagine the silence there…
What’s the best thing you ever ate at a wedding?
I am a dessert person in general but one of my favourites is salmon with english peas and chorizo, I believe.
What is your favorite venue and why?
Don’t have one so far. I really enjoy working in small venues that cater for intimate weddings and let the couple, their family and friends feel at home.
Nikon or Canon?
Canon at present but I would like to mention the words of an amazing photographer Eve Arnold /Magnum Photography/:
“If a photographer cares about the people before the lens and is compassionate, much is given. It is the photographer, not the camera that is the instrument”.
What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?
I don’t know if I have a dream one. There is so many wonderful places in the world such as Bali or Santorini but those places without an awesome couple wouldn’t make a great wedding.
If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?
Portia De Rossi and Ellen Degeneres.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?
Be yourself – do not copy others! Learn how to become a better human being and focus on the craft of photography – not on the gear.
