Today’s wedding planner interview is with the team at Michelle Durpetti Events, based in Chicago! Enjoy:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

Michelle Durpetti Events was founded in 2008 and we are very excited to celebrate our 5-year anniversary this year! We have experience providing coordination, management and production services for events of all varieties. Whether weddings, social soirees, weddings, street festivals, fundraising galas, corporate outings, product launches, venue openings, holiday parties, destination management, or entertainment booking, we do it all and more. We use our expertise to turn an event vision into an experience.

We also understand that no day is more important and planned for than a wedding day. Often times with the flurry and excitement of the occasion, the bride and groom do not have the opportunity to participate in all of the details they have worked so hard to plan. That’s where our team comes in, working with our wedding coordination staff grants the couple the luxury of experiencing every moment of their special day, stress free. MDE is here to help a couple coordinate any and every detail so that they feel like a guest on your own wedding day.

How did you get into wedding planning?

Mainly, because I was looking for a way to grow the company and diversify a little bit and I had worked on weddings in more of a free lance capacity and the team at the time was all very enthusiastic about it, so we did some research, and were fortunate enough to meet some wonderful wedding vendors who became friends, mentors and huge supporters of us as we ventured into the world of weddings.

What’s your favorite part of the job?

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?

This is not a job. Or a career. It is a lifestyle. These clients are putting their wedding in our hands. This is a day that many have dreamed about since they were old enough to know what a wedding is – so be prepared for late night emails and early morning text messages. They need you to be excited and supportive and THERE as much as possible. You can set boundaries and take time off but understand that the freedom and perks that come with this job does mean that in exchange you are always available to your clients.

What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?

Michelle & Sterling of MDE are both avid horse lovers and competitive equestrians…. Michelle will be the first to tell you that her horses, family, and friends balance out the demands of this sometimes very high stress job. Emily is the organizer of the team and enjoys traveling in her spare time.

Any great stories from working with a client?

We have so many great stories with our clients – we have been really blessed to have fabulous clients…What I love is when, at the end of the day, we leave our bride and groom and know we made a difference in one of the most important days in their lives – be it by making the decision process easier, providing a place for them to vent, re-working a budget, or swooping in crises management style on the day of the wedding. When we hear from our clients that they are so thrilled they made the decision to work with us it is my favorite moment. Recently, we had a bride and groom who had these beautiful crystal champagne flutes given to them – they were from Europe and hand-blown glass – very intricate, gorgeous glasses that they were using as their flutes for the wedding day. We watched these very pricey flutes all day long like hawks, until finally, it was time to put them on the sweet heart table for the bridal party introductions…. Sadly, one of the bridesmaids knocked into the table and BOTH glasses came tumbling down and shattered – BEFORE the bride and groom even walked into their reception. It was so upsetting for our bride and we were devastated because everything had gone beautifully and flawlessly until that moment – however, thanks to some great team work on our part we remembered an extra set of limited edition Waterford Flutes that we had from my own collection (we had used them for a tablescape in a photo shoot) – and we were not far from our office. So, off we ran to grab the flutes, and bring them back to our bride and groom so that their evening was not ruined. The day was saved, the couple was thrilled, the flutes had a new home and at the end of the day, MDE did our job. LOVE that!

What is your current favorite color combination?

I happen to love shades of blue and grey together mixed in with some really gorgeous metallics…I also always love blush tones (and think those also go fabulous with variations of grey). I am a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to color. The other members of the MDE team really balance me out because they are equal parts bold, feminine, romantic and eclectic. It makes for really fun days in the office when we are creating design/inspiration boards for our clients.

Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?

I would LOVE to see brides leave DIY behind. DIY is stressful and not always money saving…if expectations from the get go are fluid with budget parameters, it makes for a much more pleasant experience for everyone… I would love to see brides become more aware of how important their vendors are and how valuable it is to think of vendor selection as vendor investment. Given that this is such a hugely important day, why would you not want to invest in professionals with whom you feel comfortable and can trust? Not to mention who do this every weekend and know weddings inside and out? THIS is the way to have a beautiful wedding.
