Tell us about your company and how you got started.
At a young age, Christian discovered his love for cooking (and eating) the wonderful array of fresh pastries. He used to help his grandmother in the kitchen make strudels and cakes. Okay, so he helped more with the eating than the cooking, but it was here that he started to take a special interest in the sweeter things life had to offer.
Christian’s training took him all over Austria, learning from some of the top pastry chefs, such as three time world champion Dietmar Patzl. Once he had finished his apprenticeship, he worked in five star hotels and award winning restaurants throughout Austria.
With a strong desire to broaden his experience and skills in other cuisines, Christian took a position on a five star luxury cruise line, Windstar. He traveled the world and discovered new and exciting foods and cuisines.
Christian’s travels led him to San Francisco, where he met his wife-to-be, Taira. After several glasses of wine, and maybe a Jägermeister or two, he decided to stay. Oh yeah, and that’s where Taira lived too. They now reside in the beautiful County of Marin.
Christian is now doing what he has always loved to do since he was young boy wearing Lederhosen and licking the bowl at his grandmother’s house: making cakes — sharing his passion and talents with others!
And that’s how Krumbs Cakes was born.
When did you first start baking?
3 maybe 4 years old, with grandma, my first passion.
Do you do bespoke/custom flavors?
How about gluten-free, lactose-free, vegan, or other specialty options? We do about 100 flavors, if you count fusions like chocolate raspberry, or our very berry, double that number. We offer gluten free and lactose free options.
What is your favorite cake and frosting combination?
Coconut cake with cactus flower cream filling.
What was your favorite job so far?
The last cake I do is always me new favorite, it is like having kids, hard to choose one over the other.
Do you have any tips or advice for others who are looking to start their own bakery?
As long you are enjoying what you are doing, and doing it well, customers will come and appreciate your skill and craft.
Do you offer anything other than cakes?
Not anymore, we are too busy baking cakes.
What are you favorite trends when it comes to wedding desserts?
Colors, textures and styles change with every season, so we can create and develop new techniques to match the requirements. That keeps our job interesting and challenging
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are ordering their cake and desserts?
Work with somebody you like and can communicate well. Do not settle for something you do not really love. Your wedding is not like your birthday and you will have one every year! Make the one count!
