Today’s photographer interview is with Mathew and Ariel of Mathew Irving Photography, based in Denver, Colorado! Enjoy:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company
We are a married wedding photography duo (Mathew & Ariel) who loves every moment of what we do. Our wedding was one of the best days imaginable and we adore being part of that “best ever” day for our couples. Not only do we get to enjoy those days ourselves, we also get to capture those loving, delightful, once-in-a-lifetime moments-in-time just as our couples remember them… and will always remember them.
We take a modern approach to capturing romance and would describe our style as whimsical, romantic, flattering, and artistic. As much as photography is our art, it is also a documentation of the unique style, aesthetic, and love story of each of our couples. That’s why we make sure to get to know our couples, take the time to understand their vision, and flexibly utilize our skills and art to create the images they’re dreaming of.

When we met, we loved snapping selfies as keepsakes of our favorite moments together. Photos were always something that tied or romance together; like the lovely ribbon on a perfectly wrapped package. But we were simply iPhone snappers… definitely not professional wedding photographers. When Mathew was asked to photograph a family event with a borrowed entry-level Canon, there was simply no turning back. He had fallen in love (almost as quickly and fully as he had fallen for Ariel). Mathew immersed himself in a 24-7 study of photography – he even called in sick to his engineering job to study the art. As his passion for photography spilled over into virtually every word he spoke, Ariel caught the photography bug as well. Meanwhile, we were planning our own wedding and simultaneously fell in love with all things wedding. Together, we decided to change our lives and do what we loved – with the one we loved. The rest is history!
Mathew’s favorite part is actually not one part at all, but the combination of pieces. Mathew loves that a wedding day is like countless puzzle pieces that must be fit together perfectly in order to provide a gorgeous completed puzzle of images. To Mathew, the challenge of photographing a wedding day is endlessly rewarding. Not only does he get to solve a puzzle, but he gets to share meaningful works of art with the happy newlyweds!
Ariel is in love with details: the dress, the shoes, the flowers, the signs. Capturing these details fulfills Ariel as she knows that each one symbolizes a facet of the lovely couple… they spent months making sure that every facet is a flawless representation of their love and something every guest will enjoy. Turning those details into timeless photos means they will always be able to enjoy the love that went into each one. And, we both love the ceremony. We get to capture such beautiful, present emotions and everyone can feel it. Mathew has even been known to tear up at a ceremony or two.
On a recent engagement session in the Rocky Mountains, we came within several yards of a full-grown bear. It was quite frightening! But, the really awkward part was that we had no idea what to do. Our couple had flown in from Florida for mountain photos and (understandably) thought we’d have some bear know-how, given that we’re Coloradans. We didn’t. Luckily the bear ambled by without so much as a glance at us and we escaped unscathed.
Our favorite venue is the great outdoors! There’s nothing like the beauty of nature and natural sunlight… especially in Colorado.
Canon! Also, Zeiss and Leica :)
Our dream wedding shoot location is Paris. We honeymooned in Paris and fell in love with their devotion to beauty. Their parks are gorgeous, their architecture is flawless, their food is even a treat for the eyes! But mostly, any excuse to be in Paris is a good excuse.
Mathew left this answer up to Ariel who had very strong feelings about this question! It would, without a doubt, be Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. They’re timelessly fashionable and head-over-heals in love. But most importantly, Anne and Gilbert don’t define each other in their love. This iconic literary pair improve one another.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?
Become a wedding photographer because you love it! It’s a lot of work. That work can become something that fulfills you (as it has for us), if it’s your true passion.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to hire a photographer to cover their big day?
Meet with your potential wedding photographer before booking with them to make sure you click. Your wedding photographer(s) will be with you on your wedding day from beginning to end. More importantly, make sure they understand your vision and are willing to paint the picture of your day as you see it… with a brushstroke or two of their own creativity painted in.
