How did you get into wedding planning?
I was born and raised in Brazil, one of the most beautiful, colorful, and happy countries in the World. Brazilians in general love festivities and we can turn a simple baby 1st birthday party into a huge event. I worked for over 7 years in one of the most important Companies in the Northeast of Brazil, where I learned so much about planning and coordinating corporate events. Once I moved to Charleston I still had that deep desire to somehow implement everything I learned into my new life. I felt in love for this place, its plantations, historic streets, rivers, and beaches. Love is literally in the air in Charleston, we are one of the top wedding destinations in the Country. Inspired by all of that, I decided to learn more about the wedding industry and took a wedding planning course, joined the local bridal association, and started planning weddings for free. Now I can say I couldn’t have chosen better path. It accomplishes everything I always wanted in a career.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
There are so many things about planning a wedding that make me happy. I love meeting new couples, getting to know their personalities and helping them to put their dream wedding together. There is nothing more rewarding than receiving a thank you and an honest smile.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?
This is not a Glamourous job. This is HARD work and playing with color patterns and flowers and drinking champagne is only about 2% of the duty. The rest is hard-core business: negotiating, following up with vendors, and making sure that all the day to day details of running a business are in place and so on. You must have a head for business and head for design. If you don’t have the business head, have a partner who does.
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
I’m a mother of two young children and a full time wedding planner. It is hard to have extra time sometimes, but whenever that happens I enjoy going to the movies, playing with my new DSL camera, and as a good Brazilian I am, going out to dance is a pleasure.
Any great stories from working with a client?
There are several great stories. For two times the same thing happened to me. A bride contacted me looking for a wedding coordinator, we kept talking over the phone and eventually we found out we were neighbors. Another memorable story was when the mother of the bride surprised the daughter with a videographer she didn’t knew was there. The highlight video turned out beautifully and everyone was very emotional watching it.
What is your current favorite color combination?
I love the gold combination with white and blush. They go very well together and bring an elegant factor!
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
I love tall centerpieces, special linens, uplighting. Nothing against the rustic style so popular in the South, but whenever I find the opportunity to develop a glamorous wedding I feel an extra excitement!
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning?
Accept you can’t please everyone. You cannot make everyone happy, and trying to accommodate others will just make the whole process more stressful. This is your day; make it about you. Then hire at least a day of coordinator. It’s not fair to you or the people you love to be dealing with logistics and stressful situations on your wedding day.
