Today’s wedding planner interview is with Cathy of Cathy’s Elegant Events, based in upstate New York in the charming town of Hudson! Enjoy:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

We have been planning events in New York State and the surrounding areas since 2011.  Our work has brought us from Plattsburgh to Queens, to Central Massachusetts, all over Upstate New York, and the Hudson Valley.  What started as a hobby quickly turned into a business.  We pride ourselves in fulfilling our clients visions while also adding a personal touch to make each event unique to that couple.

How did you get into wedding planning?

When I got out of college many of my friends and family members were planning their weddings, baby showers, etc. but didn’t have the time to do it all on their own. I was out of work so I began helping with many of them. After a year or so of doing this, my husband finally approached me saying it is nice that I am willing and able to help, but I should really consider getting paid for it. So Cathy’s Elegant Events was born.

What’s your favorite part of the job?

I think the more connection and friendship I develop with the couple before the wedding, the more memorable it is for me. Most of my couples I keep in touch with, even years after their wedding. Many of them have become life-long friends and I find it to be a privilege to have been able to meet/get to know them during such an amazing time in their lives.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?

Do not put aside the details of planning.  I hear time and time again from other Vendorsa nd especially Venues that it is refreshing to see a planner that is as organized and detail oriented as I am.  This makes it less likely for things to be overlooked and easier to focus on the unexpected the day of the wedding.

What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?

It used to be camping, backpacking and reading. In 2012 my husband and I purchased what once was the first and largest privately owned zoo in the US, which closed in 2006. That pretty much engulfs all of my spare time now!

Any great stories from working with a client?

I have a million, none of which I would feel comfortable sharing online :).

What is your current favorite color combination?

Blush pink, grey, ivory with just hints of green.

Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?

I absolutely love that brides are beginning to incorporate metallics into their pallets and not just silver or gold but they are looking at brass, copper and rose gold!  I also know that Mason Jars and Burlap are still hot, especially with non conventional rustic venues but I am looking forward to the day when they are left behind.

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning?

Don’t put things off when you are going through the planning process and do what you can to remind your guests why they are there and why they are important to you.
