Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

I was born and raised in Wisconsin and now live in Miami. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial streak, and planning my wedding set the ball in motion for my company. I decided to take the plunge four years ago and change my career path from law practice to wedding rentals. It has been an amazing experience, and I am thrilled that Rent My Wedding is now a leading provider of rental products across the U.S. Rent My Wedding provides easy and affordable do-it-yourself wedding rentals. Clients place their orders online, and we deliver everything to their door. Afterwards, clients put everything back in the box and send back using a pre-paid shipping label. We offer free shipping both ways on all rentals, anywhere in the continental U.S. Rental products include uplighting, monogram lighting, starry night lighting effects, water effect lighting, cake and centerpiece spotlights, chair covers, sashes, pipe & drape, DJ equipment, and more.

How did you get into the business?

The idea for Rent My Wedding was sparked while planning my own wedding. I was frustrated with the fact that everything with the word “wedding” seemed to come with a higher price tag. In search of ways to cut costs, I posted messages on discussion boards and found other brides interested in sharing items for our weddings. This eventually led to me renting out my own wedding items for low prices, and starting a website to streamline the process.

What’s your favorite part of the job?

Interacting with clients is my favorite part of the job. I love hearing how much money people are able to save, and see how venues are transformed with lighting!

If you could pick one unique product or service offering, which would be your favorite, and why?

Uplighting is definitely my favorite product. It is so easy to setup, and the result is truly amazing. All you do is place lights on the floor up against the wall, and the lighting will instantly transform the venue. We have seen church basements and high school gymnasiums look like million dollar weddings, all thanks to uplighting!

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to others just getting started in your field?

Surround yourself with fabulous people. You can have the best business idea and strongest work ethic in the world, but that won’t get you anywhere unless you have a great team in place. Take your time with hiring, and find people who are truly on board with your mission and vision. Our goal is to ensure a flawless rental experience for every single customer. It takes a special type of personality to not only handle this level of attention to detail, but also love providing this type of service. Everyone from our warehouse clerks to customer service representatives share the same can-do attitude, and really enjoy going above and beyond to provide a “wow” experience. I think this makes all the difference.

What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?

I love traveling, scuba diving, boating, biking, and music.

Any great stories from working with a client?

Since we’re an online rental company, we don’t typically get the chance to meet our clients in person. However, one day, an elderly gentleman in a Hawaiian shirt showed up at our warehouse. He sweetly explained that he wanted to surprise his wife with a 50th wedding anniversary party. We loaded up his car with chair covers and lighting, and off he went. The following week, he returned to the warehouse, smiling from ear to ear. He proudly told us that he may not use a computer, but he can setup a gobo!

What makes you different from others in your field?

I started the company while planning my own wedding, so I know how important it is that there are no problems on the bride’s big day. For this reason, we offer a number of guarantees. First, we inspect every single rental item before shipping, and guarantee that all items will arrive in perfect condition. Additionally, our team monitors every package while in-transit to ensure there are no issues with shipping. Third, we provide 24/7 phone support in case of any setup questions. We strive to make the process easy, flawless, and stress-free!

Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?

I recently attended a colleague’s wedding and LOVED their unique idea for taking photos with the bride and groom. They setup monogram lighting behind their sweetheart table, and invited guests to come up and take photos with them. The monogram light provided a beautiful backdrop, the bride and groom could relax without being on their feet, and guests received a photo keepsake!

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning their big day?

My tip for couples planning a wedding is to light it up! Our clients constantly tell us that wedding lighting provided the most bang for their buck, and made more impact and garnered more compliments than any other reception decoration. Uplighting is a budget-friendly way to transform your reception from ordinary to extraordinary.
