Tell us a bit about yourself and your company
Hello! I’m Joy Michelle and I own Joy Michelle Photography. I am a Fine Art wedding photographer on the East coast and I also teach aspiring photographers how to grow their businesses in the wedding industry. My business is based in Annapolis, MD and my photographic style is romantic, elegant, and authentic. I also have an adorable corgi named Jack, and a sweet tooth like you wouldn’t believe!

How did you get into wedding photography?
Before I ever thought about doing photography as a business, I was a hobbyist and artist through and through. I read the magazines, forced my little siblings to model for me, and practiced a lot. I simply loved the art of taking photographs. Growing up, I shot using film and later had the opportunity to take a few film development courses, which really shaped how I take photographs and influenced my style today. I think I always knew I would work in a creative field one day, but I didn’t know it would be photography. I was a Graphic Design major in college and one day during my senior year, when I should have been working on a design project, I found myself reading about wedding photography instead. That is when the shift really started and I never looked back. I worked for a few other photographers learning everything I possibly could and eventually launched Joy Michelle Photography in 2013.
What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?
That’s a tough one…there are so many beautiful moments during a wedding day. I would have to say though, that photographing and styling details at the start of the day, and photographing the couple portraits are two highlights for me.
What is your favorite venue and why?
I honestly don’t have just one. I love that my job takes me to new places each weekend. So my answer is: anywhere on the water! Here in Annapolis, there are so many great venue options. I absolutely love beaches, docks, boats and all things coastal, so weddings on/or near the water are my favorite.
Nikon or Canon?
Nikon all the way.
What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?
If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?
Chip and Joanna Gains! I look up to them in so many ways and I know it would have been a blast to shoot their wedding day. Plus, we’d become BFF’s of course and they would make me my dream home! ;)
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?
I would tell aspiring photographers that there is no silver bullet to success. Don’t look for shortcuts. Do the hard work and success will follow. The biggest mistake you can make is to imitate and copy other’s work because you’re selling your own style and craft short. See more advice, resources, and help on my educational youtube channel.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to hire a photographer to cover their big day?
Do your research. You can’t redo a wedding day. There are many options out there, but not everyone will be a fit for you or have the experience to take on a wedding. Look for someone who understands your vision and who you feel comfortable around. You will spend more time with your photographer than ANY other vendor on your wedding day, so you want to make sure you can have fun with them! And, of course, ask if they’re insured, own backup gear, and have backup photographers.
