Today’s wedding stationer interview is with Genevieve Ali of Lady G Paperie, based in Westminster, Maryland! Enjoy:

How did you get started doing wedding invitations?

I started doing wedding invitations after merging my loves of calligraphy, painting, and graphic design. I began traditional calligraphy practice when I was eight years old and in college I started doing more with modern and organic calligraphy, at which point I ultimately began teaching classes and taking on addressing clients once word spread about my work. After I graduated, I began experimenting with watercolor painting and digital design. Wedding invitations flowed naturally from there and Lady G Paperie was born!

What is your favorite color combination?

Right now I’m in love with deep berry red. Neutrals or light grays mixed with blush and that deep berry color will make me swoon every time.

What is the most unique invitation you have designed?

Though not an invitation, I designed a magical elopement announcement. I love the romance and intimacy of elopements. This one was inspired by the couple eloping in a forest clearing at sunrise, so I painted handmade cotton paper deep green and used copper gold ink for a completely hand calligraphed announcement. I did a green watercolor wash for the envelopes and matching copper gold calligraphy for the addressing.

Do you have a favorite typeface?

Cliche as it may be, I love Copperplate and Copperplate Gothic for mixing original calligraphy with a classic, clean typeface.

What is the most bizarre request you have received?

This is a 100% positive bizarre request (and I was the one who ended up making it bizarre, not the client): I was asked to create Mr. and Mrs. signs for a sweetheart table and the client sent me a photo she liked of white script painted on slices of wooden planks. As I was sourcing materials, I noticed redwood bark peeling off of the trees in the park behind where I lived. I asked the couple how they’d feel about using some of the bark since they were having an outdoor, natural wedding. She loved the idea and I ended up using strips of raw bark that I baked, sanded, and painted for the signs. It was completely new for me and ended up being so much fun!

Ampersand or the word “and?”

Both. For me it’s all about context. Sometimes the ampersand fits better with the design and feel of the suite, sometimes the whole word.

Any advice for brides?

When you’re looking for a stationer, find a designer who is truly inspired by you, your partner, and your vision; someone who will create a design that embodies the moods, feelings, wonder, and inspiration that you want the wedding to bring to life. Your stationery, whether you start with save the dates or your invitation, is the first impression your guests will receive of your wedding, and you should feel completely comfortable with the person crafting that impression.

Do you offer more than just stationery?

Yes I do. As a calligrapher and artist, I can put letters on just about anything. I offer services including envelope addressing, wedding vows, spot calligraphy, placecards and escort cards, menu designs, favor tags, reception items, personal love letters, signage, logo design and branding. I especially love working with raw, organic, or offbeat materials such as wood, panes of glass, linen, and handmade paper.
