Get to Know a Wedding Cake Designer: Miss Cupcakes (1)

What are your favorite trends when it comes to wedding desserts?

Favourite trends for wedding desserts would have to be cupcakes. Cupcakes are a modern touch to any wedding and make for a modern twist on a traditional favour or even as personalised edible place settings. Cupcakes can be used in so many ways at a wedding, so it’s great to discuss ideas with brides and grooms to be. As a very simple idea, the cupcake takes away the need to cut and divide up wedding cake at the end of the day, and they are the perfect edible reminder of a very special day.

Any great stories from a wedding you’ve officiated?

I officiated a wedding on a very remote island where the couple contacted me just a week prior to their planned wedding date, and less than 3 days to departing from Los Angeles to Tahiti! They have had no luck in finding what they were looking for (as I previously mentioned, options for a Western-style ceremony were close to non-existent until I started my celebrancy practice) and they got to the point where they were extremely frustrated and desperate.

They had planned this fantastic vacation in one of the most beautiful places in the islands of Tahiti, but could not find a celebrant to officiate their dream wedding. I planned and wrote the ceremony for them and we ended up the following week holding the ceremony on the reef side, with waves crashing in the background, at sunset time, all what they had wished for. Lots of tears and emotions I can tell you.

What is the most unique invitation you have designed?

One of my very favorite designs is my Woodland Winter wedding suite. I love designing custom work and went on location to the event site to get ideas and sketch. I understood the bride wanted to incorporate both a winter and woodland theme that reflected the beauty of Skylands Manor – the reception site. The Skylands castle is actually New Jersey’s own botanical garden.

I chose to use natural elements such as pine cones, evergreens, winterberries, tree branches and an original sketch of the castle itself for the wedding suite. To add another layer to this wintery feel, I chose silver ink, white metallic liners printed with snowflakes and a frosted white birch paper wrapper. All this was held together with a belly band encrusted with twinkling swarovski crystals. The envelopes were then sealed with silver wax carrying a snowflake motif. So much of this suite was meticulously hand done.

What made this wedding suite so unique was more in the form the challenges I had faced along the way. All of this was created and printed during Super Storm Sandy which ravished our shores here in New Jersey and left me without electricity for almost 3 weeks! Yes, it was nearly impossible to have this completed with no means of power. In the end, this came together as a beautiful wintery mix of nature and snow that reflected the event perfectly. So much so, that the day of the wedding New Jersey was hit with over 2 feet of snow! However, none of this stopped the merriment that was to follow and the sparkling blanket of snow created a magical backdrop for the days festivities.

15 Ways to Personalize Your Wedding by Letting Go of Traditions (2)

15 Ways to Personalize Your Wedding by Letting Go of Traditions by Joshua Withers Wedding Celebrant (Sydney, Australia)

I’ve never liked uniforms, they’ve always felt yuck on me. It’s much the same way I feel about wedding traditions. In my daily job as a marriage officiant, I think that marriage is the best thing that two people can do together, and it’s an event worth celebrating. But I also think that many wedding traditions get in the way of celebrating marriage, and instead you can end up celebrating a wedding, which is like putting the horse before the cart. So please spend a few minutes with me today as I liberate you from decades of weddings and introduce you to a few wedding traditions you can leave at the chapel door.

One more thing before we begin: If you do or don’t choose to include any of these traditions in your wedding, do it because you’ve decided to, not because that’s just what happens or because I told you not to.

Styled Shoot: Snow, Sparkle and Sweet Sentiments by Carla Ten Eyck (Hartford, CT)

As far as we are concerned, there is nothing more romantic than a winter wedding! And being New Englanders, there is no better place for one than Vermont. This styled shoot encompassed all of the best parts of winter- cozy fabrics, interesting textures, fluffy white snow, comforting treats and warm snuggles. In planning the fashion for the shoot, stylist Beth Chapman of The White Dress by the shore set out to embrace the cozy elements of winter, but to create contrasts: “I had such fun playing with textures and taking traditional wedding elements and mixing them with wintry pieces. For the bride’s less formal look, I paired a cabled cashmere sweater from Elisabeth Hunter Cashmere with a statement necklace from Ivy and Aster and a custom blue tulle skirt from The White Dress by the shore. For the groom’s formal look, I styled a classic tuxedo from Valentino Tailors with a handmade vintage chunky scarf. A bride’s attire should always be reflective of her venue- even if you are getting married on a frozen lake!”

Sage Hill Ranch was the perfect venue for our inspirational wedding shoot captured by Antonio and Paula Crutchley Photography. We first met the owner Gabrielle when Antonio and I celebrated our wedding anniversary and rented one of the cabins on the property. It didn’t hurt that the owner of the property is English just like me – put the kettle on….
