Today’s cake designer interview is with Tia of Miss Cupcakes based in London, England! Enjoy:
Tell us about your company and how you got started.
Miss Cupcakes offers a bespoke cake service throughout London. All our cakes are made to order using only the freshest and finest premium ingredients. Miss Cupcakes was founded in 2010. For many years I was baking cakes for friends and family birthdays as I really enjoyed the creative and imaginative aspect of it, and baking cakes and cupcakes for loved ones. I used to get a real sense of satisfaction when I received great feedback and recommendations, and referrals grew to the point where I knew I wanted to give it a real go full time as my main source of income. It took a big push from friends and family to take the plunge to set up Miss Cupcakes and I’m really glad I did!

When did you first start baking?
I started baking as a young child with my mother. My mother was my biggest inspiration, giving me the best tips on perfecting recipes and techniques which were passed down from my grandmother. There was a real sense of tradition in learning tricks of the trade as well as classic recipes that had been in my family. I’m pleased to now be able to share them with so many more people!
Do you do bespoke/custom flavors? How about gluten-free, lactose-free, vegan, or other specialty options?
We offer 10 different cake flavours for our customers to choose from. At present, we have a gluten-free sponge but will certainly be looking to cater for all in the near future. If anyone has a particular request I’m always eager to see if it’s something I can offer, so I advise anyone to pick up the phone and just have a chat and see where it takes us!
What is your favorite cake and frosting combination?
My favourite cake and frosting combination has to be red velvet. There’s something about the fab colour as well as the creamy frosting that make for a really indulgent cake.
What was your favorite job so far?
My favourite job so far has to be creating new novelty Disney cakes and cupcakes. Birthday cakes are always such fun to do and I’m always happy to listen to special requests for cake designs and toppings. This is usually the case when it comes to children’s birthday cakes as there’s always a preferred character or two from each Disney movie. Even a Frozen themed birthday cake could have never-ending character combinations and different looks, so it may be Olaf cupcakes one week and a elaborate Elsa creation with delicate snowflakes and sparkles the next!
Do you have any tips or advice for others who are looking to start their own bakery?
My top tip would be to pay attention to detail; you want all your customers to return every year, so offer the best service possible making sure that your cakes not only look great but taste scrummy too. I never underestimate the power of great customer service and a real passion for what I do. I like to think this comes across with everything I bake.
Do you offer anything other than cakes?
Miss Cupcakes offers novelty cakes, cupcakes and giant cupcakes. I am always interested in doing new things, so the Miss Cupcakes range is limitless and I’m open to hear of new cake ideas all the time.
What are you favorite trends when it comes to wedding desserts?
Favourite trends for wedding desserts would have to be cupcakes. Cupcakes are a modern touch to any wedding and make for a modern twist on a traditional favour or even as personalised edible place settings. Cupcakes can be used in so many ways at a wedding, so it’s great to discuss ideas with brides and grooms to be. As a very simple idea, the cupcake takes away the need to cut and divide up wedding cake at the end of the day, and they are the perfect edible reminder of a very special day.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are ordering their cake and desserts?
Couples should try and have an idea of what they would like in terms of theme, cake flavour, size… Any cake decorator can create something bespoke but will need a guideline. I have many photographs on my website and encourage people to take a look at the galleries I have to round up inspiration. It may be that there’s a particular colour theme to the wedding or the bride would like to incorporate a design that is also part of her wedding dress or even have fresh flowers on the wedding cake that match the bridal bouquet. These are all potential things to think about for the bridal couple and any and all ideas can be discussed.
