Today we’re bringing you an interview with florist Amanda Jewel Floral + Design, based in Atlanta, Georgia! Thanks being here Amanda:
Tell us about yourself and your company.
Hi! I am an entrepreneur and mother which are the two large roles that I fill on a daily basis. I LOVE being both and would not trade it for the world. I started my company almost eight years ago and it has felt about eight years long because I started from scratch. No one guided me and no one gave me a chunk of change to get started.
I am a lover of all things cheese and am usually barefooted all day everyday. My favorite thing to do is “tinker” in my studio or run around outside with my kiddos. I adore my husband and want to be with him 24/7 which I pretty much do anyways.
See the rest of the interview after the cut!
How did you get into wedding florals?
It began when I was in high-school where I took an internship (not paid) with a flower shop who did everyday flowers. I swept floors, watered the flowers, dusted, cleaned buckets and basically did all the things no one else wanted to do. It didn’t take long to move up to become a flower delivery driver at age 17 where I drove around a Dodge Ram van, I think–regardless it was huge. That is where I saw for the first time how much flowers truly make people happy. My 17-year old self stood in front of people who were sick, or sad or even celebrating their birthday and their faces were beaming with happiness as soon as they laid their eyes on the flowers. At the time, I was just the delivery driver but soon after I was promoted again to learn how to create floral arrangements.
What is your favorite part about being a florist?
I consider myself a designer. A designer creates art and my favorite part about being a designer is watching my clients see what I have designed (or transformed) for the first time on their special day. It is truly a magical feeling and is worth all of the blood, sweat and tears to get there!
Any great stories from working with a client?
Almost all of them. Each client is unique and I appreciate all of them for bringing a cool look or design to the table. One that does stick out is when she saw the reception space for the first time she just kept yelling, “Shut up!”, “Shut up!”, “This can’t be real”. I couldn’t stop beaming and crying of happiness because she was so happy.
What is your favorite flower and / or style (modern, classic, natural, glam) and why?
I am a huge fan of ranunculus. We also call it “nuncs” if you are in the biz. :) You can find almost every color in the ranunculus family and they last forever. The smell is not there but the color and texture is everything.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding florists just getting started?
Go with your gut. I didn’t go to a fancy school and have this awesome resume when I started. I knew that I wanted to do this and so I did it. I didn’t look back and I kept pressing on with my gut giving the direction. It sounds silly but most people are just too scared, what do you have to lose? NOTHING! You only live one life.
What are you favorite trends when it comes to wedding flowers?
I don’t really follow too many trends but I love when I sit down with clients and they ask me if they should do that? OR who all gets a corsage? My response is always, this is your day so do what you want. A lot of brides get caught up in traditions, maybe that is just the south but in every meeting I am always pushing for do what you want to do.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are ordering their wedding flowers?
Don’t be afraid of color! This is your one time to shine and design your day so just because Pinterest keeps showing you blush or white that doesnt mean thats what you should do. I always say look around your living room, what color do you see most of?
