Today’s wedding officiant (or wedding celebrant, as they like to call it Down Under) interview is with Joshua of Joshua Withers Wedding Celebrant based in Sydney, Australia! Enjoy:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

I’m an Australian guy that turns boyfriends and girlfriends into husbands and wives. My wife and I run two businesses, I’m a wedding celebrant, or officiant if that’s what they call me in your area, and my wife is a Pop-Up Wedding Planner. I’m super passionate about creating meaningful, personal, enjoyable and fun wedding ceremonies and Britt creates fancy elopements with The Pop-Up Wedding Co.

How did you get into wedding officiating?

My interest in officiating wedding ceremonies began when I attended a family wedding and found the ceremony lacking. I found it meaningless, weird, a little bit alien and not at all enjoyable. I thought that there should be less of a gap between the awesomeness of falling in love and getting married, and the wedding ceremony. In the past, so many wedding ceremonies have been a snooze-fest that everyone has to endure before the bar tab opens. I think they should be awesome!

What’s your favorite part of the job?

I have a job?!!? Seriously though, the favourite part of being a wedding celebrant is that real and raw moment just before we finish the ceremony and I pronounce the couple husband and wife. It’s a once in a lifetime moment and I love just hovering in it for a moment.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding officiates just getting started?

Put the script, the notes, the iPad or the book down, and speak from your heart. That would be the biggest lesson I learned a few years ago. Of course you need to prepare a ceremony, but don’t read it word for word at the wedding. Instead, speak from your heart and be real about it.

What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?

Outside of the wedding business, I’m a bit of a nerd. I love listening to nerdy podcasts, reading non-fiction books on my Kindle, taking Britt out for meals at places we’ve never been before and finding stupidly cheap flights to take us to weird places for adventures.

Any great stories from a wedding you’ve officiated?

One of the best wedding stories I can remember is when we tried to hold a wedding inside a Foo Fighters concert but they wouldn’t let us. We ended up holding the ceremony in a park nearby and all went inside the concert for the world’s most rock wedding reception.

What advice would you pass along to couples planning their wedding?

My advice to couples is to always question every wedding tradition and make sure it applies to you, your beliefs and principles. If you don’t believe in evil spirits then you might not need a bridal party.

Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?

When it comes to wedding trends I vomit a little bit inside. Call me a hipster or call me a loser, I just hate being shoved in a box and a label slapped on the outside. I understand there’s themes and trends that are hot and they’re all super lovely. I would just like to see trends go down the sink and for people to just create something personal and awesome, not create something because it’s super hot right now. Smiley face!
