Today’s wedding photographer interview is with the lovely Emily of Emily Clack Photography! Enjoy:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company
I grew up in Richmond, VA and now live in Washington, D.C., which I love. I’ve always been the creative type and started off as a graphic designer before discovering wedding photography. I started my photography business 3 ½ years ago and have enjoyed every minute of it. Wedding photography appeals to me so much because it incorporates several styles of photography like portraiture, fashion and photojournalism. It is a great feeling to be apart of such an important life event and to be able to tell a story through the lens of my camera.

How did you get into wedding photography?
I honestly feel like photography found me. I was in a place in my life where I wasn’t sure which direction to head next and I just happened to see a photographer’s work at a wedding I attended and it just hit me – I knew it was what I wanted to do. So I went back to school to learn digital photography, (having only a bit of film experience from high school) and started assisting other professional photographers until I felt comfortable enough to go out on my own. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made. I truly love my job.
What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?
That’s hard to choose because there are so many beautiful moments on a wedding day! I do love capturing the emotions on the face of the bride and groom (and their parents) as they are reading their vows to one another. I almost always tear up during this part. Thankfully there is autofocus!
What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?
A bride telling us (my second photographer and I) that she hates candid photos as she is about to walk down the aisle.
What’s the best thing you ever ate at a wedding?
Mac + Cheese Bites from Spilled Milk Catering!
What is your favorite venue and why?
Josephine Butler Parks Center – Mansion at Meridian Hill. It’s a beautiful historic mansion located next to one of my favorite parks in DC.
Nikon or Canon?
What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?
Anywhere in Italy.
If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?
Prince William and Kate Middleton – loved her dress!
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?
Know your gear! And don’t think you have to have the most expensive equipment in order to do a good job. It’s not about what you use, but how you use it.
