Today’s photographer interview is with Jim of Jim Vetter Photography, based in San Francisco, CA! Enjoy:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company:
I started my business in 2009 with a great love for photography and a desire to bring joy to my clients and to myself. From the start, we’ve focused on excellence in the quality of our work and the quality of the experience we provide to our clients. We go the extra mile to be professional, accommodating, skilled and fun!
On a personal note, I am the father of a beautiful 9 year old girl, I love music, I love to make music and I’d happily eat cheesecake for breakfast lunch and dinner.

How did you get into wedding photography?
I had been shooting other types of parties and events for a few years when I was asked to shoot a wedding. I was nervous at first but knew that I was ready so I took the job. It scared the heck out of me but I loved it! I knew after that first wedding that I had found my calling.
There are so many reasons that I love to shoot weddings! Everyone (mostly) is in a great mood, everyone looks great, the venue (usually) looks great and its a joyous occasion. I love celebrating these events with my clients and also helping them to enjoy the day.
What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?
My favorite part of the wedding day to capture is the creative session with the bride and groom. Sometimes we do this before the ceremony if they do a first look. Otherwise it is immediately following the ceremony. The bride and groom are giddy with excitement and are really into each other which makes it a lot of fun. It is also the best time to capture the essence of relationship between them. This is when I’m usually making the photos that end up on their walls and as two-page spreads in their wedding albums.
What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?
I once asked a maid of honor (whom I knew rather well already) what her name was because I did not recognize her after hair and makeup were completed. She didn’t know what to make of that; could only say “WTF?!”
What’s the best thing you ever ate at a wedding?
I love cake! Some wedding cakes are good and some are amazing. Honestly, its all a blur over the years. I can’t pinpoint one best cake but I certainly try not to miss out on it.
What is your favorite venue and why?
There are so many great venues in northern California! Its hard to choose a favorite. Certainly Leal Vineyards is in my top 5. The lake and guest houses are such an amazing backdrop for a ceremony and the vineyards are beautiful – not to mention they have great staff there. Also, I LOVE the Ritz in Half Moon Bay. So gorgeous there on the coast and the hotel itself is incredible. Finally, Stanford Campus in Palo Alto has the most beautiful architecture to shoot in.
Nikon or Canon?
Nikon all the way!
What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?
There are many dream locations for me! Notre Dam, Taj Mahal, On the Great Wall in China, the big room in SF City Hall :)
If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?
Angelina and Brad. Hands down.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help and reach out to other photographers. There are many generous professionals who remember what it was like when they were getting started. And, never stop learning and growing. If you do, you will be put out of business by an enthusiastic kid later on.
