Today’s photographer interview is with Ottawa based Nicole Amanda Photography. Enjoy!
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company
My name is Nicole of Nicole Amanda Photography. I am based in Ottawa, Canada and love to shoot detailed outdoor weddings. I have been shooting weddings for two years while attending school, but I have finally graduated and am now working on my photography business full time. I am city girl with a country heart, so I adapt well to a lot of places. I love summery sunshine, water, horses, smoothies and am obsessed with the colour teal.

How did you get into wedding photography?
I have loved looking at wedding photography since I was 9 or 10. I took my first “wedding photo” when I was 11 years old, and to this day, that is the one wedding photo still framed in the couple’s living room. Since then people have always said I’ve had a knack for photography. I took photography courses for fun throughout high school but never thought too much of it. When I was in twelfth grade, I had no idea what I wanted to do, but knew I did not want a gap year — so I opted for photography in college once again as a fun placeholder. Ever since then, I knew I wanted to combine my love for photography and excitement for weddings.
What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?
I absolutely love watching the bridal party getting ready. It is the start to the day and all of the girls are so excited and giddy. I am also very detail oriented, so I love capturing getting ready shots and all the details that make a wedding unique.
What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?
When I was shooting a hotel cocktail reception, I had a cousin of the bride that just wanted to chat me up and hit on me the entire evening. I kept trying to photograph details to act like I was busy, but he just kept trying to “educate” himself by asking me how I did what I did!
What’s the best thing you ever ate at a wedding?
Oh my. I love food and I’m not picky. I embrace everything! It’s all so luxurious to me. I remember adoring this whole wheel of brie cheese one couple had under a heat lamp.
What is your favorite venue and why?
I’m still sort of a newbie, so I haven’t shot at that many venues yet! Strathmere is always quaint. The National Arts Centre was just so fancy. Orchard View is also beautiful. Visiting Stonefields Heritage Farm, however, took my breath away. Can’t wait to start shooting destinations.
Nikon or Canon?
I’m a Nikon girl – no reason specifically. When I was looking to buy I played around with the two and Nikon just felt more natural to me.
What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?
I have been dying to go to Bora Bora for any occasion for years now. I am a tropical beach bum at heart!
If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?
I’ve always been a big Taylor Swift fanatic. We’ll see if and when she finally finds the one, but I’d pay HER to shoot her wedding.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?
Don’t act as if every wedding vendor is your competition, even if they’re of your same specialization. Other vendors will be your best referral source, so befriend them, don’t hate them! That is what I love about shoot & share photographers; almost everyone is more than willing to teach rather than hide.
