Today’s planner interview is with Amanda of Amanda Douglas Events based in Winnipeg, MB, Canada!
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
Amanda Douglas Events is a calibration of my 8 years of experience in events, hospitality, and decor design, and my love for all things elegant, unique, and beautiful. I’m a certified Planner/Coordinator through the Wedding Planners Institute of Canada, have diplomas from the University of Winnipeg in Public Relations, Marketing and certification in Project Management. I’m an active member of the WPIC Alumni, Winnipeg Wedding Industry, was recently nominated for the Reader’s Choice Planner of the Year Award through Canadian Special Events and am currently adding to my certifications and portfolio through the Wedding and Event Institute in Event Design. I brought my creative and organizational strengths together as well as my passion for great and beautiful events, and founded Amanda Douglas Events.

How did you get into wedding planning?
I wanted to be an event planner since I was 18. Long story short I tried out other jobs, directions, but event planning just kept coming back around. I have equal parts creative brain and organizational so it just is the perfect fit. After finishing my studies in PR and Marketing I decided that it was time to give it my all and try starting my own business. The rest is history, and I couldn’t be happier to do what I do every day.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
That moment when my clients exhale and relax and realize that their wedding or event is going to come together the way they want it to and dream of it too. I love that I can be that calming influence and through my planning and ideas they start to relax and really have fun with the planning process.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?
If you’re not willing to give it 150% — don’t do it. I know that sounds harsh but being self-employed and an event planner takes your all. It’s not something that’s just fun and glam. It’s really not. There’s a lot of paper work, research, and a lot of grunt work at times. If it’s the right fit for you, it’s a ton of fun, and you’ll be pinching yourself often over the fact that you get to do what you do every day, but you have to work your butt off to get there. A lot of people think they can just do it on the side, or a little bit here and there, and then they wonder why their company isn’t getting anywhere. You really truly need to invest a lot of time and energy into it to even get people to know you’re around! Again, if it’s in your heart, and this is what you want — it’s SO worth it!
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
I love to travel. I know, maybe not a hobby to most people — but I dream about it, budget for it, read books on it, and pin away, so I’d say, for me, it’s a good hobby! I also love to read, cook and bake. I’m a freak about plants and gardening, horse back ride, camp, walk and train my dog (he’s the cutest thing you’ve ever seen, I promise!). I’m a huge movies fan, and of course spend as much time with my husband, friends and family as I can.
Any great stories from working with a client?
Oh gosh, there’s not enough room in a blog post for that! I’ve done a lot of different types of weddings so each one comes with it’s own unquiet story. But I would have to say I just really love those moments when I connect with my couples and we just laugh and have a really good time planning.
What is your current favorite color combination?
Wow, I have to pick just one? Well, being a lover of nature, I love greens. I love a mix of many different shades, as many shades as you can get, with accents of white and gold. It’s so chic and fresh, and can be done in so many different ways and styles. The options are really endless.
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
I would love to see brides take a step away from cute country vintage and run full force toward European old world “vintage”. It’s so classy, elegant and timeless.
