Today’s wedding planner interview is with Shaun Cox of A D.I.Y Affair Weddings and Events based in Chattanooga, TN! Enjoy:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
Let’s see… I am a wife, a BFF to most women I meet (girl power!), I am a passionate and creative entrepreneur and I have a crazy attraction to all things feminine and sparkly. A D.I.Y. Affair Weddings and Events was conceptualized to be the go to resource for couples that actually want to plan their own weddings, but really have a strong desire to have a trusted and dependable source to handle the logistics of their wedding day and ensure all their plans are carried out just the way that they have envisioned. We exclusively offer wedding coordination, no planning, just coordination and our couples love that as much as we do!

How did you get into wedding planning?
I have always been the go to resource for friends and families planning events since I was a teenager. I have a good talent with my hands and making sense of chaos seems to come natural. I love seeing a need and creating a solution. After planning my own wedding in 2011, and actually seeing where the emotional connection between myself and my wedding coordinator was totally out of sync, I wanted to be able to offer couples an experience that not only encompassed the logistics and beauty of their wedding day but also catered to the emotional needs. We all know that planning a wedding can be very stressful at times, especially as a bride who is probably doing it for the first time.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
My favorite part of coordinating weddings is definitely getting to see the bride at the reception dancing with her friends and family, not having a care in the world. It is at that moment that I know my team has completed a job well done.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?
It will sound so cliché, and many others before me have said it a thousand times — be true to you. Be true to your personality, and do not be afraid of letting it show. I wanted to have a voice and a brand that someone else already had developed, because surely if they were in business and using this voice and branding, it must be successful, right? Not true, you can’t confidently have the same voice and brand as someone else because it will show you’re not genuine and it will always feel like a script. People love genuine people, so go with that and you will never fail. Be true to who you want to work with and you will never feel like you are working a day in your life.
When I first started A D.I.Y. Affair Weddings and Events I offered planning and coordination because everyone else did, and I thought that’s what potential clients would want. I was wrong. I was following the leader instead of developing my own ideas and being a leader, and guess what? I never booked a single wedding planning client. It wasn’t my strong point and I didn’t feel comfortable or confident in explaining the service offering. After nine months in business I decided planning is not for me. I did away with it and said that coordination comes naturally for me, ran with it and never looked back, and it has been such a success.
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
I love Pinterest. Some days I will just get on and love all the pretty pictures without even pinning. I also love to shop for décor for our boutique. It’s an addicting habit but I always find myself shopping for the perfect accessory. I must admit that I also have a mean addiction to yard sales and antique malls, you never know what unique item you might score a deal on.
What is your current favorite color combination?
Ok so I have a few color combinations I absolutely adore: mint green, black and white; champagne, pink and gold; and black, gold and white.

Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
I love trends because the brides I work with have a great skill of using restraint. They incorporate their favorite trends and always put their own unique spin on it so that their personality shines through. Trends inspire people to think outside of their own ideas and to push limits and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
