How did you get into wedding planning?
I studied International Hospitality Management in the Netherlands with my major being Event Management, before going on to work in the Business Development team of Hilton Amsterdam., I then moved to Ibiza where I started working in the wedding and event industry and I launched my own company this year.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
You get to know very inspiring couples, suppliers and venues! It offers a great balance between an office job and out of office job. I like the fact that I can be creative, inspire other people with my ideas & event design as well as creating a day they will never forget! To see your work come alive after more or less a year of planning is a very special moment.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?
Obviously you need to be very organised. One little detail that isn’t as planned can be a nightmare for a planner. Also you need to be a people oriented person, open minded, full of ideas, patient and a good improviser. My advice to all new wedding planners is to make sure you work with professional and reliable suppliers. You can be the best planner but if your suppliers are not doing their work properly then you won’t be successful. Make your own experiences with the supplier and don’t rely on other people’s opinion only. Also treat your suppliers as you treat you clients – a good working relationship is a must to have a good time organising events.
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
I have always loved music (also one of the reasons I choose to live in Ibiza). When I am not at work I practise my DJ skills and play the drums. I also like to enjoy the beaches and countryside of Ibiza whenever I can. I like to get inspired by attending different events and meeting new people and spending time with my closest friends. Running is what keeps me balanced, focused and stress resistant.
Any great stories from working with a client?
Every couple comes with a great story. I like it when couples have a strong connection to the island and choose to marry on Ibiza because they met there, got engaged or fell in love on the island.
What is your current favorite color combination?
I like to choose the colour depending on the venue. If it is a beach wedding I like soft pastel or pure white decoration – as it is enhances the blue colour of the sea. If it is a countryside wedding then I like to match it with the colours of the surroundings. Many countryside venues are surrounded by beautiful nature with lots of different colours. Using the same colours to match your ceremony arch and bridal bouquet or table flowers gives you the real countryside experience. But again it depends on your wedding style! The boho flower bouquets can be extremely colourful and look amazing next to a white dress, but also the new minimalistic trend is a style I am currently following.
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
I like that the dresses are getting a more casual, modern-romantic twist. For years women were choosing very uncomfortable, poufy and old-fashioned dresses that are not related to our fashion today. A touch of vintage or classic is very beautiful, but old-fashioned and humongous dresses are only uncomfortable and out of date. I like the fact that wedding cakes are getting more design oriented and so are bridal bouquets. Trends that break away from the norm are what I like the most.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning?
One tip is don’t scrimp on music and photography – these are two very underrated aspects of a great celebration and unforgettable moments – captured forever! But most importantly – enjoy planning your wedding! Don’t ever forget the reason why you are planning this event and choose your favourite food and styles, not the ones from your family or friends – it is your day and you should have fun organising it.
