We have a lovely wedding planner interview for you today with Samantha from Milk & Honey Special Events based in San Francisco, CA! Enjoy:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company
My name is Samantha Spector and I’m the founder of Milk & Honey Special Events. I worked in event planning for 10 years before I started my own company. My career began with planning fundraising events, including the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, which raised over $1 million each year, a series of walks for the National Kidney Foundation, luncheons, conferences, receptions and even a golf tournament and a fashion show.

While planning non-profit and corporate events, I leapt at any opportunity to plan a personal event for friends and family. Weddings especially have always been a passion. For years I imagined what it would be like to start my own event business. The birth of my baby girl and my husband’s support gave me the final impetus to do it. Milk & Honey plans weddings, non-profit and corporate events, big and small. I have a soft spot for kids parties and love planning those as well.
How did you get into wedding planning?
Starting in elementary school I collected creative ideas from wedding magazines in an album I still have. When I moved in with my boyfriend (now husband), I hid it in the back of my closet for fear I’d scare him off!
I love designing weddings. Combined with my event planning background, wedding planning is a natural fit and also something extremely fulfilling.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
My favorite part of the job is event design. I love hearing my client’s stories – how couples met, their favorite places and activities, and their style likes and dislikes – then creating a design profile for their event that’s unique to them.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?
Develop a power team of exceptional vendors. Think of it as a recipe. Using only the best ingredients produces a high quality finished product. Constantly be on the lookout for such partners.
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
Running. I finished my first two marathons in high school and ran 6 more after that. Going on a long run always leaves me with a feeling of accomplishment. Of course I love spending time with my baby girl, Sophie, too. Thank goodness for baby joggers, so I can multi-task.
Any great stories from working with a client?
This past summer I planned a wedding in wine country during a heat wave. The temperature rose to 108 degrees at one point during set up! We were moving heavy lounge furniture and ceremony benches in the sun, but luckily everyone stayed well hydrated and we had plenty of time to take mini breaks. During the ceremony and reception we made sure plenty of iced water and lemonade were available, as well as lots of seating in the shade. The cake had to be delivered right before it was cut, since it wouldn’t be able to withstand the heat and the flowers had to be set up at the latest possible moment before guests arrived.
While planning weddings you often hear about back up plans in case of rain, but not many Bay Area brides consider the possibility of a heat wave. It’s my job as a wedding planner to make sure the cake doesn’t melt, guests don’t get dehydrated and the flowers don’t wilt.
What is your current favorite color combination?
In keeping with the Great Gatsby inspired weddings that have been popular this past year, I love art deco inspired color palettes like black, gold and pale pink. Green or mint can look great incorporated into this color scheme, too.
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
A trend to leave behind: Sending electronic invitations. It feels a lot less personal than sending invitations the old fashioned way and not as special. But, it’s not because I am against technology…A trend I love: Using photo apps such as WedPics to get user generated photos of the big day all in one place.
