Today’s planner interview is with Madeline of Sweet Ambiance Events based in Birmingham, MI! Enjoy:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
My company is mainly focused on the non-traditional, fun, and creative wedding. I want my brides to enjoy being a part of planning their wedding and explore options to create a wedding that not everyone has already attended. I want them to be able to relax and enjoy their day, surrounded by people they love in a pretty setting with a well staffed service. I personally love the DIY that doesn’t look so DIY, the different, the casual, and the fun parts of weddings.

How did you get into wedding planning?
I have an old family friend who at the time was working with Bash, Please. They needed some assistance on a wedding in Minneapolis, MN and she asked if I’d be willing to help out. Unfortunately, the wedding slipped away and we never ended up going out there, but the thought of working a wedding just sparked inspiration and a new found aspiration for me. After that, I got a job as an intern/assistant at Silver Charm Events in Los Angeles for a little over a year before starting up my own company.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
I could have a tie here. I absolutely love the decor and details of a wedding. But I think my favorite part of the job has got to be watching the couple interact on their wedding day. Watching them share their vows and their first dance always makes me shed a few tears.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that I don’t need to be anxious on the wedding day. I used to feel overwhelmed looking at the timeline and having a confined amount of time for a lot of tasks. I used to think “If something goes wrong, it’s going to mess up the timeline.” But from my experience, the calmer I am, the better the day flows. There has never been a problem I couldn’t fix quickly. I guess I just gained more confidence in myself with each wedding I worked.
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
I love cooking and baking from scratch. Finding new recipes for different meals or treats is so exciting for me. It’s definitely made me a Pinterest addict!
Any great stories from working with a client?
I did one wedding for a bride in Kentucky. The bride was a professional equestrian, and their wedding was on Derby Day. The day just seemed magical and tied in so well together. They had an outdoor ceremony and an indoor reception at a vineyard. The sky was filled with these amazing clouds and it started storming just after everyone made it inside the reception. It was a beautiful building with open windows so we could see the storm and gorgeous lightening strung about the venue. She had a rustic theme, BBQ for dinner with a loaded baked potato bar (YUM) and she did all of her DIY herself. Everything about the event just fit like puzzle pieces. The reception was very laid back and you could really feel that everyone there was celebrating their love.
What is your current favorite color combination?
That’s a hard one for me to answer. I would have to say I default to a mixture of softer colors such as pinks or peaches, throw in a little white and add a pop of color. I like simple colors that stand out without overwhelming. But when it comes down to it, it really matters what theme the wedding is.
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
There’s a lot of them, but if I had to choose one I would have to say dessert bars. And even though I do think a small wedding cake belongs on a dessert table, having only your classic wedding cake seems somewhat bland after seeing the creativity at the weddings I’ve worked and attended. I absolutely adore the variety of desserts you can place on a dessert table and the décor that fits in with it too. (That’s another favorite part of my job!)
