Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
Thomas Bui Lifestyle is full-service wedding and event design company based in San Diego, CA. We have been designing weddings for 13 years. How did you get into wedding planning?
Growing up in Vietnam, my family was always hosting elaborate events for American and French politicians. I grew up seeing all the beautiful events and the vision and beauty always stuck with me. With a scientific background, I was always able to visualize a blank space and knew how I wanted to fill it up.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
The details and the planning process. Clients will show me one photo as their inspiration and from there I like to bring their vision to fruition and exceeding their expectations.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?
Don’t be fooled when you watch all those shows on T.V. About weddings. It’s not all that glamorous. It takes a lot of hard work and perseverance to be successful at your craft. I’ve been in the business for over 10 years and it did not happen over night.
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
Travel, seeing the world and bringing new ideas for my clients. The exposure I get from seeing different parts of the world, I more creative I am with my craft. On a weekly basis, I enjoy meeting friends to catch up. I love trying new restaurants and trendy places. Also love clothes and shoes shopping. If I had more time I also love having elaborate multi-course dinner parties, something small and intimate.
Any great stories from working with a client?
I have been so blessed to have worked with such great clients over the years. One funny story I do have is this. The grooms men show up to the church about 30 minutes before the ceremony was about to start. One of the grooms men, comes up to me and says “is there something you can do about his?” and lifts up his leg to show me that the seam down the entire length of his pants had come undone. Well, let’s just say that thank goodness I have an assistant that knows how to sew. My assistant quickly told him to go into the bathroom, strip and throw out his pants to her. 15 minutes later, pants sewn and he was ready to walk down the aisle
What is your current favorite color combination?
I don’t think I can pinpoint a favorite color combination. I love all color combinations because different color combinations will tell you a different story.
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
Right now, I really love chevron. Chevron can be modern, classic, and vintage and rustic., depending on how you use it; it’s so versatile. What I can do without is mason jars. Please leave the mason jars at home.
