How did you get into wedding planning?
Interestingly enough, I grew up in the industry. As far back as I can remember, I would be “playing” wedding planner in my father’s photo studio. He was a well esteemed (awarded, he always likes it when I add that in) wedding photographer in Orange County, California. I grew up watching him and fell in love with weddings. I always knew I would be in the industry but didn’t know where I fit in. I worked with him in his studio as an assistant, as well as another photographer. I then worked for an elite catering company where I found my place and passion for the behind the scene hustle and bustle that went into planning a wedding.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
Hands down, my clients. I know that sounds cliché but it’s the truth. I believe I have attracted brides over the past four years that have the same values in life, the same moral compass if you will. It has been a delight to plan a proposal for a girl I have never met before, witness him getting down on one knee, and then moving forward in planning their dream wedding.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?
Stay humble, and grow in your business. There is always something for you to learn or to get better at, never think you have arrived. Also surround yourself with strong leaders in the industry for support and motivation.
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
What is that? Just kidding. I have five kids and a Great Pyrenees that acts like my sixth child, so there really is little time for hobbies. But daily, I carve out time to be in the Word and put my business before the Lord as I began each new day. On special occasions that I do find myself with nothing to do, I have an addiction to craigslist/goodwill finding awesome pieces of furniture and repainting them into something beautiful for my family!
Any great stories from working with a client?
Yes, one of my clients from last year bought me an iPad BEFORE their wedding. Hands down best client EVER!! They are definitely on our Christmas list, and am forever grateful for the time we had together. I truly miss them!
Another time that wasn’t as exciting, but was just as meaningful, was with a bride that I had become very close to within the last weeks of her wedding planning. Her father had passed away weeks before her wedding. I remember not knowing what to say. I didn’t have the right words, but I was on my knees for her every day leading up to that moment that she walked down the aisle alone.
My heart carried that burden for her as I wanted so much to take the pain away but it was necessary for her to walk down alone in her grieving process. She is such a woman of strength and I look up to her so much, and was honored to be a part of her big day. Visions interviewed her right before her big day in a post we call “Diary of the Busy Bride” where she opened up about all that she was facing during that tough time and encouragement for any other brides out there that might be facing the same thing.
What is your current favorite color combination?
This is a selfish one because of our gorgeous website that I’m in love with, but I would have to say Black, White and Gold!
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
I try to play devil’s advocate on all things trends, only because you may look back and regret some of the things you thought were amazing and then say oh no, what was I thinking! That’s where an expert opinion comes in handy.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning?
First things first, when newly engaged, sit back relax, and don’t feel like you have to plan your whole wedding in a month!
I guarantee the first step of finding a wedding venue is a lot more difficult than anyone lets on. Comparing apples to oranges is not fun, which is why I would suggest hiring a wedding planner to assist you with all of the quotes and fine print that just doesn’t make sense.
We help establish priorities from the very beginning and guide you into creating a workable budget. Yes workable, not all budgets that bride and grooms create are workable. Knowing the difference will help reduce stress and make for a much better experience overall.
