Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

I Do…Weddings & Events is a full-service event design and planning company comprised of myself, and four other planners. We work together and on our own events. We each have our own strengths and personalities, and I love being able to match a couple with a good fit. In addition to planning, we are also floral designers. How did you get into wedding planning?

My background is marketing, advertising and public relations. I worked in Project Management, which mirrors wedding planning quite a bit. You have to be organized, keep to the budget, meet deadlines and be creative all at the same time. My background also taught me to juggle and multi-task, a huge asset in the wedding industry.

What’s your favorite part of the job?

Making the fun parts more fun (like selecting florals and décor) and making the stressful parts more fun as well (like budgets and seating arrangements).

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?

Be prepared to work harder than you’ve ever worked before. You need to be on time, prepared, organized and always have a sense of humor. But more importantly, be yourself and never force a fit. Rapport with a client is extremely important.

What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?

I love going to movies! I love the ritual of popcorn and a drink, and getting to step into a new world for two hours. I am a voracious reader, which I also love to do with my little boy Bennett.

Any great stories from working with a client?

I had a bride with 10 bridesmaids several years ago. She married at her family’s parish, while she and the ladies got ready at a neighboring hotel where her reception took place. After arriving at church, the groom was very concerned about the rings. He asked me to call the bride and make sure the rings wouldn’t be forgotten. I had her on speaker phone, and she laughed saying, “I have ten bridesmaids. There is no way they’ll let me forget the rings!” She arrived 10 minutes prior to her ceremony, and realized that yes, the rings were indeed forgotten. She said she refused to have a ceremony without them. The church coordinator insisted we begin. When I could see the bride getting upset, I interjected and said I’d find the rings. As soon as she got down the aisle, I hightailed it to the hotel—breaking several speed limits! I tore apart the room and found the rings, which were in their box. They fell between the bed and the dresser. I ran back to the car, drove very quickly back to the hotel, and made it to the side door where the church coordinator was standing. I ran up just as the priest said “May I please have the rings?” The bride and groom were very happy, and thanked me during toasts. They told the story of what had happened, and I got a standing ovation from 300 guests. It was very sweet!

What is your current favorite color combination?

I love anything vibrant that pops, particularly because it photographs so well. For fall, I am particularly drawn to jewel tones.

Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?

I am still a huge fan of the photobooth…but with a twist! I love seeing silhouette artists, caricaturists, video photobooths and flip books. I believe they are here to stay. It is an excellent way to keep guests entertained—particularly the non-dancers!
