Today’s wedding stationer interview is with Rochelle of Creative Outlook Designs, based in New York, NY! Enjoy:
How did you get started doing wedding invitations?
As a graphic design business, my focus was on graphic and web design for small businesses. However, it wasn’t until I did my brother’s invitations 10 years ago that I saw a future and a market at doing stationery for weddings. Everyone loved my brother’s invitation that I started getting referrals almost instantly. The business grew from an overwhelming request from brides wanting custom invitations and stationery.

What is your favorite color combination?
I love color, patterns and textures, however, I tend to lean toward a neutral base (white, ivory, grey) and adds pops of color and texture.
What is the most unique invitation you have designed?
One of my recent requests this past wedding season was to do New York Subway theme wedding invitations. The couple met on the train and wanted to show how their two different subway lines converged and thus a love story was born. The bride even wrote a poem that was a lead in to the invitation. It was definitely a step away from the norm and a fun change.
Do you have a favorite typeface?
My favorite typeface changes from year to year. Right now I love to use Burges Script, Carolyn Pro, and Bombshell. I’m always exploring new fonts to keep my designs fresh.
What is the most bizarre request you have received?
One bride inquired about doing her wedding invitation on a round thin piece wood from a tree trunk. Each one would be hand carved. She also wanted it boxed, however, when she realized the production and shipping cost, she quickly shifted gears.
Ampersand or the word “and?”
“And”, unless the Ampersand is being used as a design element.
Any advice for brides?
Before a bride begins her search for stationery, she should do her homework. The internet is a wealth of knowledge to get them started on what they may like in terms of design, style and type of invitation/stationery for their wedding. It helps make the initial consultation go more smoothly if they have their stationery concepts or ideas ready to show.
Do you offer more than just stationery?
Yes, we offer favors and customized gifts.
