Get to Know a Wedding Stationer: Metal Doily Press (3)

We’re here with Monique of Metal Doily Press, based in Los Angeles! What beautiful stationery designs — enjoy!

How did you get started doing wedding invitations?

I’ve always been partial to script typefaces so the wedding world had always been a venue I’ve wanted to be a part of. My very first wedding suite was for a cousin, it was so exciting to create all the pieces of her wedding suite for her. Next up was taking a letterpress printing class, I was instantly hooked! I bought my press soon after and a few friends were nice enough to let me work on their wedding invites for them. Working on my own wedding invitations was really what pushed me to explore all paper options, pricing and techniques to get Metal Doily Press headed in the route of offering wedding invitation design and printing to others.

What is your favorite color combination?

Teal + anything.

What is the most unique invitation you have designed?

I recently designed a wedding suite that was all typography based meant to look like a vintage type broadside poster. I had so much fun creating this suite for Sarah & Shawn to reflect the casual ranch wedding theme they had for their wedding day.

Ampersand or the word “and?”

Oh an Ampersand for sure! I remember learning cursive in school and would draw them over and over. Now having taken an in person calligraphy workshop with Molly Jacques ( I’ve been exposed to so many different variations I want to try and draw myself.

Any advice for brides?

Come up with “Must Have” & “Nice To Have” lists, your guests will never know what you planned on doing that didn’t work out or there wasn’t time for. If it’s making you stress, ask for help from your loved ones or drop it and you’ll move onto the things that are doable. Also, don’t get pressured by wedding trends to feel like you need to have everything you see on wedding blogs or else your wedding will be terrible. Stick with you and your partner have deemed most important and you’ll be happy!

Do you offer more than just stationery?

Yes! I also create chalkboard wedding day signage like dessert bar, signature drink or welcome signs for the big day. I’ve also hand lettered Save the Date info and had custom hand stamps made for some couples to print their own Save the Dates.
