Get to Know a Wedding Photographer: EXO Photography (1)

Today’s photographer interview is with Nicole and Josh of EXO Photography, based in Huntington, NY! Enjoy:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company

We are a soon to be wife and husband photography team. We are getting married this summer and completely understand our brides now. We met at our best friend’s wedding and six months later we found ourselves quitting our jobs. I worked in marketing and Josh was a freelance photographer and videographer. We quickly grew from our home studio, to a small studio in Great Neck, NY to our official storefront studio in Huntington Harbor, NY.

We are a boutique studio that specializes in edgy, sexy, and artistic photography and cinema. We love pushing boundaries with our unique vision. We often spend our weekends and nights reading and educating ourselves on new techniques and scouting new places for our shoots. We love challenging each other, we do get competitive often. We believe in leaving our couples speechless, making their parents tear, and their friends jealous.

How did you get into wedding photography?

Josh started out as a video editor at a studio that later hired him as a cinematographer. Photography was always his passion and he was quickly requested by many brides at various studios in Long Island and NYC. I (Nicole) always had the passion for photography and with Josh the passion became a new career. Photographing weddings is amazing. You get to see and capture the most important moments of a couple’s life and telling their story. You get to meet their families and their closest friends. There is something about weddings that is so magical.

What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?

My favorite part would have to be the prep session and romantics. I love shooting prep sessions. You can be creative with all the details, the shoes, the dress, the rings, etc. I also love the candid shots of the bridesmaids and the bride. The prep is when I spend my time with the bride alone and get to see her nerves and mom’s excitement. The Romantics are the funnest part of the day. The couple is relaxed after seeing each other and we are able to have fun with posing and lighting. This is when our work turns into art as we capture their love.

Josh’s favorite part is definitely the romantics as he gets to be super creative with the couple.

What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?

Wow. It would have to be when the two families don’t get along. It’s awkward all around. You want to make the couple happy and you see them struggle between the families.

What is your favorite venue and why?

Nicole: I love Gotham Hall. Every wedding there is different and the decor is always interesting and unique. Plus, you have NYC as your photo session location, what more could you ask for?

Josh: Gotham Hall as well. I love the size, high ceilings and architecture.

What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?

Nicole: Greece, I always wanted to go there. It is so beautiful and traditional weddings are so unique, they offer such an emotional scene for photos.

Josh: Bora Bora, need I say more? I love the ocean, and to shoot a wedding with a such a beautiful view is a dream.

If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?

Nicole: The Royal family, William and Kate. That’s not a wedding you get to see everyday and the traditions are one of a kind.

Josh: I would shoot Elvis, he is one of the biggest idols that passed away and he reminds me of my father when he was younger.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?

Nicole: Don’t purchase all the expensive equipment right away. Purchase the necessary items and grow with your business. Photographers tend to buy everything and the newest items before learning what they need for wedding photography.

Josh: Biggest lesson that I can pass on is to clean your lenses, front and back before every shoot. Also, check your camera sensor because you will have to do a lot of retouching to take out hair, watermarks and particles.
