Today’s wedding photographer interview is with Mike and Frida Photography, a husband and wife photographer team located in Chicago, Illinois! Check out their beautiful photos below:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company
We’re a husband-and-wife wedding photography duo based in Chicago who specialize in small, intimate weddings. We’re particularly fond of backyard and barn weddings, but we’re also fond of anything involving DIY and handmade details. We’re two people who really enjoy what we do.

How did you get into wedding photography?
We started shooting together out of a mutual desire to capture natural interactions with couples and newborns. We soon realized that what really drove us were weddings, and we decided to aim for intimate and meaningful wedding photography. People responded to what we did, and we kept doing it.
What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?
We don’t really have one. Most of our couples choose our full coverage option, which means that on the wedding day, we’re there from start to finish. Some of our weddings have lasted more than 12 hours, and we love it, because it means we don’t miss a thing.
What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?
The toasts are always the most unpredictable parts of our weddings; we never know what people are going to say. However, if the bride and groom are laughing during or after the toasts, it’s a good sign.
What’s the best thing you ever ate at a wedding?
That’s hard to say; there have been so many good meals. However, at a recent destination wedding we shot in Michigan, the couple, who were foodies, served some of the most delicious Polish and German food we’ve ever eaten. Our biggest challenge that night was avoiding the food coma.
What is your favorite venue and why?
So far, people’s backyards and barns. There’s nothing more intimate than a few friends and family membered gathered to celebrate the union of two loved ones. It brings back the focus to the people present at the wedding and how much they care for each other.
Nikon or Canon?
We shoot Nikon, but we’re very minimal in our gear setup, and if our first cameras had been Canons, we’d be shooting with those. We frequently recommend either to people who ask us for advice, depending on their needs.
What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?
Wherever our next couple takes us. We love to travel, and there’s so much beauty in the world.
If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?
That’s a tough one. Maybe Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley. They’re two thirds of an indie rock trio named Yo La Tengo, and we think they’re pretty rad.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?
Be kind to everyone. Smile.
