Get to Know a Wedding Planner: Cherry on Top Events by Jen (6)

Today’s wedding planner interview is with Jen of Cherry on Top Events by Jen, based in Nebraska! Enjoy:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

My name is Jen Pace and I started Cherry On Top Events by Jen in February of 2012. We specialize in planning weddings, but also plan corporate events, fundraisers, birthday parties, anniversaries and much more! Prior to starting COTEbJ, I worked with an extensive background in purchasing, finance and customer service for over 16 years. This background has more than benefited my clients and company as a whole!

How did you get into wedding planning?

Planning events in general has always been something that came very natural for me! When I started toying around with the idea of opening my own business, it was with the love and support my family and friends that pushed me to “jump”!

What’s your favorite part of the job?

Honestly, ALL OF IT! Being involved in each aspect of a wedding from start to finish, although it can be tough and even frustrating at times, it is very rewarding in the end knowing that I have helped a couple create an event where the memories will last a life-time!

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?

Network, network, NETWORK! To me, who is still new to the wedding industry, there’s nothing more important than getting your name out there and recognized!

What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?

I very much enjoy playing sand volleyball, board games, hanging out with friends and family and spending time with my boyfriend, Kevin, and our 2 dogs, Goofy (a boxer) and Shakira (a Siberian Husky)!

Any great stories from working with a client?

My favorite story to date is not from a wedding, but the proposal of one of my best friends, Jaci! I had been working with her then boyfriend, Doug, to plan the perfect proposal! They met on the school bus and we made arrangements for him to be on a school bus to pick her up outside of her childhood home! Everything was planned down to every last detail with a fake back story of why we needed to go out there, as her childhood home was out in the country, not the city where they lived! I had been distracting Jaci for hours prior to when and where we were to meet the bus! She and I were on our way out to the meeting site, less than 5 minutes away when I received a call from Doug – I answered and Doug says “Don’t freak out, but I forgot the ring!” – just then, my cell phone lost reception, as we were in the middle of nowhere! Jaci still had no clue that this was all a set up, so I kept on going and we met up with the bus! When we pulled up, Jaci was completely confused on why there was a bus stopped in the middle of the road and then Doug got off the bus – Jaci was completely mind-blown! I looked at her and said “I’m sorry I lied to you – enjoy your night!” and Doug came over and lead her to the bus! He then rushed back over to me to give me his keys so I could go back and get the ring! I went on to plan their beautiful wedding, a short 5 months later! They are now expecting their first child and just found out yesterday it’s a boy! It’s been a true honor to be a part of their love story!

What is your current favorite color combination?

I’m a huge fan of a bold Red, White and Black color combination – but it has to be done properly!

Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?

I love the vintage and country chic themes – both very simplistic and classy! But wish brides would leave behind the Black & White “Kim Kardashian” wedding look – although it’s beautiful if done correctly, it’s overdone, and more times than not, done incorrectly or with an unfit venue.
