1. Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
My name is Ashley Fuentes and I am the owner of Event Solutions. My husband and I started Event Solutions in August of 2007. Like many companies we started off very small and working from our home. In 2010 we hired our first full-time wedding planner and moved into our current location. Later that year, we hired 2 additional full-time wedding planners as we were taking on more and more weddings. Each year we have been in business, we have planned and produced more weddings than the previous year – we are definitely a growing company! Planning weddings is our passion. We love to meet and work with brides throughout the entire process of planning their wedding!

2. How did you get into wedding planning?
I have always had a niche for planning parties – for family and friends. It was my hobby outside of work and school. I realized that I loved what I was doing so much that I wanted to do it full-time.
3. What’s your favorite part of the job?
My favorite part to being a wedding planner is getting to know the brides and their families, and helping them create a vision that we turn into a reality for them. Taking the Bride and Groom into the reception to see a first look of the space is such a gratifying moment. The expression and emotion that we get from the couple really shows us how much they love and appreciate all our hard work!
4. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?
The biggest lesson that I have learned being a wedding planner is knowing how to value myself, my work, and my company. We, as wedding planners, always want to be completely accommodating to our clients. At the same time, we have to value ourselves and our work so that clients will appreciate everything that goes into our job for them.

5. What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
I love spending time with my husband and my two puppies. I am also preparing to welcome my first child into this wonderful world, so a lot of my personal time is getting ready for her to arrive!

6. Any great stories from working with a client?
There are so many great stories from many different clients. But if I had to choose, it would have to a couple that got married October 15, 2011 – Rosemary and Arjay. They are the sweetest couple and they actually hired me about 2 years before their wedding. They came out to a bridal show here in Houston and stopped by our booth to ask questions. A couple months later, they came to another show – just to talk to me! We scheduled a time to meet, they booked me on the spot and told me that from the moment we first met that I was the planner for them! During planning the wedding, the bride wanted to go to NYC to try on dresses at Kleinfeld’s. The bride and mother flew out to NYC and ended up saying “Yes” to the Dress – she opted not to be on the show. Closer to the wedding day, they flew me out to NYC to see the dress and go on a day trip all around the city. It was my first trip to NYC and wow that was awesome! On their wedding day, they were the most excited, energetic couple and crowd of people! Let’s just say the wedding was filled with lots of dancing – even during the salad service! They were truly a fun couple to be able to work with and eventually become friends with!
7. What is your current favorite color combination?
Narrowing down color combinations to my favorite is so hard…I love them all! Right now I am totally loving 2 different styles (and color combos) that are completely different – vintage and modern. For my vintage color combination I would say soft shades of pinks, browns, and natural accents. For my modern color combination, I would say shades of gray with a pop of color like yellow or fuchsia.
8. Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
One trend that I think should always be incorporated into a wedding is lighting. It truly changes the atmosphere of any venue. Also, I absolutely love fun trends that make the wedding all about the couple. For instance, having cupcakes instead of cake is always a fun trend that many of our couple will use. Another is incorporating who they are into their photography. We had a couple that loved to read. So for their engagement shoot, one of our planners suggested that they do it at a book store. They had a fun time searching for books, hanging out, and incorporating their style and personality into the photos.
There are some trends that are on their way out. Extreme modern is beginning to take a backseat to the vintage style, but overall I love both. The way I look at trends is this: What time of year is it? Where are they getting married? What are the colors? What is the couple’s style. From there, we create a vision within whatever trend works for the couple.
