Today’s wedding planner interview is with Heather of First Coast Weddings and Events, based in Florida! Enjoy the interview:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
First Coast Weddings and Events was founded in 2002 with the mission to create stylish, fun, and memorable weddings on Florida’s First Coast. We realize that every couple is unique, and every wedding should be too. Owner and lead planner Heather Canada is one of only 69 Master Bridal Consultants in the world, making her a foremost expert in the wedding industry. Our entire team is trained in event logistics, managing vendors and wedding protocol to ensure you receive the most professional service possible.
How did you get into wedding planning?
When I was in college, I knew I wanted to be an event planner. After graduation, I got an admin job in a hotel catering department, and worked my way up. I was handling the local corporate market with the wedding sales manager left, and they add that segment to my responsibilities. I fell in love! A few years later, I decided to pursue my dream of being a business owner and started First Coast Weddings and Events in 2002.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
I have two! One is when the bride and groom see the ballroom for the first time, and all the details we have spent months planning have come to life. I love the expressions on their faces! I also love the hugs I get at the end of the night, when they tell me what a wonderful day they have had and how none of it would have been possible without me and my team.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?
Don’t expect to be an overnight success. Even after 10 years, I learn something at every wedding. There are no shortcuts in this business – just hard work and dedication.
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
I design websites for other wedding-related companies, and while it sounds like another job, it’s relaxing and different. I also love shopping, and spending time with my two pit bulls.
Any great stories from working with a client?
After 10 years of planning weddings, I have lots of stories that touch my heart. We’ve dealt with family drama, hurricanes, power outages, venues closing down. But mostly, I love being able to stay in touch with my past clients, and getting to plan their baby showers, and kids’ birthday parties, and many times I feel like part of the family. Many of my couples live out of state, so social media has made it so much easier to keep in touch!
What is your current favorite color combination?
All of them! We work with so many different styles and themes that it’s hard to pick just one.
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
I’m not a big fan of any “trend.” I love to find new and unique elements for our clients, not the same thing that is in every wedding magazine or blog. But if I had to pick one – sparklers! Drunk people with fire is just not a good idea.
