We’re so pleased to bring you this interview with Crystal, the owner of Exceptionally Yours Weddings & Events based in Anaheim, California! Enjoy:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
I graduated from CSU Dominguez Hills in 2013 with a degree in Psychology and Marketing. While in school, I started working as a dance teacher, helping a lot of my dance studios put together their huge recitals. After spending a couple of years coordinating dance recitals with up to 350 kids, I decided to expand my horizons and go into wedding and event planning.
See the rest of the interview after the cut!
I have gained experience in the wedding industry by having the pleasure of working for a bridal store, DJ Company, other wedding coordination companies, and just helping out with a lot of my close friend’s weddings. On top of being an extremely professional and well-organized coordinator, I am also a dance teacher. My experience as a dance teacher is with people of all ages, from 18 months old to 75 years old! So if you’re looking for someone to put together a great first dance, bridal party dance, or parent dance, I’m your girl!
I take great pride in what I do and really strive to eliminate all the stress from planning a huge event while also getting the outcome that you envision. I have been complimented numerous times that I go above and beyond and that my calm demeanor has helped settle even the most nervous of brides and grooms. I look forward to being able to meet with you individually, and show you how we will make YOUR dream wedding a reality.
How did you get into wedding planning?
Before getting into event planning, I was [and still am] a dance teacher. I first started putting together big productions and dance recitals of over 300 dancers and their families for the different companies that I worked for, and realized how much fun I was having doing this. From there, I expanded and started doing more intimate parties and slowly transittioned into weddings!
What’s your favorite part of the job?
My absolute favorite part of what I do is being able to eleviate any stress from my couples during the process and especially on their special day. I get such a great feeling inside when I see my couples and their guests enjoying their day without a worry in the world.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?
Be a team player! Don’t think that you have to do all of the work yourself. Your amazing vendors team also want the couple’s day to go perfectly, so work with them..not against them. This also allows a much positive vibe throughout the day
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
When I’m not planning events, you can find me spending time with my puppies, Freddie & Sadie [they will always be my puppies no matter how old they are], eating a ton of sweets, traveling, and enjoying life with the people I love.
Any great stories from working with a client?
I feel like every wedding creates a great story! However, my favorites are the ones where my couples step out of the box from the “traditional” wedding. Wether it is putting together a flash mob, having dinner be a variety of different food trucks or coming into a ceremony on a horse; it’s always so great seeing a couples creative ideas come together!
What is your current favorite color combination?
My all-time favorite color combinations are the neutral/nude colors with a pop of color!
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
I’d love to see couples leave out the “traditional” wedding events out that THEY DON’T want to do. There are so many times when I sit with my couples and they say “We know that we have to do a cake cutting, because that’s what people do at weddings,” or “We have to do a money dance, because that’s the tradition.” No, there isn’t a rule where you HAVE to do all of these things. Just do the things that YOU want to do and enjoy YOUR day!
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning?
Listen to your heart! There will be many suggestions, advice, and tips given to you throughout the proccess. Listen to what is said, but make decissions based on what will make you happy on the special day. Many couples get so caught up with what would make their guests happy, that many times they forget about themselves.
