Alexandra has aspired to owning a wedding planning business since she was 15 years old. While the exact vision has changed over the years, her goal to make other people’s dreams a reality is still the most important element. In order to pursue this dream she studied abroad during the spring of 2016 in London. There she interned with a bridal boutique and studied at The London College of Fashion. With three event/wedding planning internships behind her, she has learned to think on her feet and to always keep an open mind. Alexandra graduated December 2017 from Drake University in Des Moines with a B.S.B.A. She completed a double major in entrepreneurial management and marketing with a concentration in sales management. Recently, she has become a certified professional bridal consultant with ABC (The Association of Bridal Consultants).
How did you get into wedding planning?
Growing up I was taught that dreams come true when you believe. With hard work, passion, and support anything is possible. Unfortunately, not everyone knows how to make their dreams come true. They are constantly looking for their special moments and unsure of their path. Being able to make other people’s dreams come true is something that I have always strived for.
After planning my own birthday parties and friends parties throughout high school, I realized that I can create those special unforgettable moments with my events. By bringing people together and creating something unique that will hopefully inspire them in their own lives.
I decided my sophomore year of high school that I wanted to be a wedding planner. Since then that dream has evolved and grown into what is now Alexandra Michele Events.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
My favorite part of the job is the little details. I believe that it is the small things that make an event memorable. This can be anything from a simple sign to a party favor. Then once all of the details are put together it transforms the space into something magical. These are the things that your guests are going to remember and continue to talk about long after the event has passed.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?
The biggest lesson that I have learned is to always be prepared. A planner should always have an emergency or back up plan. Not to say that anything will go dramatically wrong on the special day but there are almost always unexpected little hiccups. As a planner you need to be prepared and always have your emergency kit. All the items in your kit might have obvious uses to someone who isn’t a wedding planner. But to a planner you know that there are more uses for that scotch tape, twine, and safety pins than someone who isn’t a wedding planner would think. Even if the event is a birthday party you still need to be prepared for the unexpected. You will learn after a couple of events what items are important to keep in your kit and the ones you need to add.
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
When I am not working on an event I love to do yoga, dance and paint. You can usually find me doing something creative like making decorations for an event or just for around the house. I find that yoga is a great way to relieve the stresses of event planning. Since you are using so much creative energy yoga is a good way to mind and leave feeling refreshed.
Any great stories from working with a client?
One of my proudest moments as a wedding planner was my first client. Many people have about a year to plan a wedding. My clients approached me in March for a wedding that year in June. They had a venue booked but everything else needed to be planned and organized. This was a big challenge for a new event planner but everything turned out beautifully! They couldn’t have been more pleased with the results.
What is your current favorite color combination?
My current favorite color combination is lavender and blush with gold accents.
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
I love the trend of dessert bars! Why have just cake when you can have donuts, ice cream, smores!? There are so many options and you can still have a cake to cut it just doesn’t have to be huge and expensive. Plus most guests don’t eat the cake I know I’m always excited when there is a donut wall.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning?
It is never too early to start planning things. While following a schedule or to do list is important, it isn’t written in stone. If you want to go dress shopping go dress shopping! If you want to order invitations and start stuffing them why not? If you start getting things done before the NEED to get done it will make things easier and you will find that you are less stressed. And you can enjoy the wedding planning process instead of dreading it.
