How did you get into wedding planning?
I was in corporate events for a number of years creating events in radio, TV, and the performing arts space. A friend asked me to plan her wedding. Once we were into things, I realized how much I loved planning and designing for peoples’ big life moments. I love the emotion and satisfaction it brings to be able to create joy for someone. I’m passionate about creating beautiful experiences for clients, and bringing them joy on their special day.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
Really getting to know our clients and creating a wedding experience that exceeds their dreams. Making their wedding so uniquely theirs that we hear guests comment on how perfectly ‘them’ the whole experience is. Also when guests tell us that it’s the best wedding they’ve ever attended, it thrills us to be able to create this experience for our clients.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?
Listen and ask for feedback, often. Learn to interpret communication styles and be able to relate to people in a way they understand. Understanding that successful wedding planning is teamwork, love your vendors and be open to the entire team’s thoughts.
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
You’ll find me at classic film festivals all over the country screening films from the 20’s – 60’s. I love studying the set designs, costumes, and lighting, When I’m not enjoying a classic film, you’ll find me at flea markets hunting for unique antiques and collectibles.
Any great stories from working with a client?
So many! One of my favorites is a couple whose dream was to have wedding photos with a vintage truck. While we knew of a few pretty enough to qualify, none of them were operational so couldn’t be brought to the wedding venue. Several weeks before the wedding, a beautifully restored 1930’s Ford truck pulled out into the road in front of me. I followed the truck to its destination, and asked its owner if he would like to have it featured in a wedding. It was a such a great moment on the wedding day when this immaculately restored 1930’s Ford truck pulled up for post ceremony photos. The smile on the couple’s faces was pure magic.
What is your current favorite color combination?
For neutral tones, I’m loving the palette of soft gray paired with whites and greens. My current favorite ‘hot’ palette is tangerine and eggplant, with pops of chartreuse. There’s so much depth in this combination.
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
I love the trend of mixing table designs and shapes, it has such eye appeal to the dining space.
If I had my wish, I’d love to see brides leave behind the rustic look in favor of an organic design with a few rustic elements. There’s more design depth to explore.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning?
Give yourself twice the amount of time you think you’ll need to complete tasks. Don’t procrastinate, but rather get things done as soon as possible. The last month leading up to the wedding will be filled with activities, clear some space and be present to take it all in, enjoy every moment.
