Today’s wedding planner interview is with San Diego-based Oh So Chic Wedding & Event Planning — thanks so much for interviewing with us today!

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

My name is DeShai Roberson (pronounced da-shay) and I was born and raised in California Bay Area but have always considered myself a So-Cal girl at heart. I live in beautiful sunny San Diego and own and operate Oh So Chic Wedding & Event Planning. Oh So Chic is all about designing and creating events that truly reflect our clients. An Oh So Chic client is open to fresh ideas, isn’t afraid to incorporate color and wants an event that reflects their style and personality.

How did you get into wedding planning?

I’ve always been a creative spirit. Arts & crafts were always my favorite subjects in school. I took everything from ceramics to fashion design so it was no surprise when I decided that I wanted to go to college and major in Interior Design. I have always been fascinated with color, textiles, patterns, decorative accents and so forth. As I began my career in the design field I stumbled upon the wedding and event world and quickly realized that events, home interiors and entertaining are so easily entertwined, After assisting a co-worker with planning her wedding and interning with other planners for about a year, Oh So Chic was born.

What’s your favorite part of the job?

My favorite part of being a wedding planner is the ability to assist clients with pulling together all of their ideas and creating a cohesive overall design that they couldn’t visualize but are over the moon about when it all comes together. I also am obsessed with picking out linens!

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?

Over the years I have learned that you have to be confident in your abilities. Clients rely on you as the expert and trust that you know best. You have to believe in your talent, trust your gut and continue to educate yourself. I see so many people start a wedding because it seems like “so much fun”. It is a very fun career but it also takes a lot of patience, tenacity and organization skills. There are many long days and lots of grunt work that come along with the territory so take the time and shadow, shadow, shadow other wedding professionals.

What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?

Living in San Diego the possibilities are endless but one of my favorite pass times is taking a trip down to the beach and just watching the waves and relaxing. It’s a form of meditation that always rejuvenates me. I never turn down a trip to the movies and always make time for shopping.

Any great stories from working with a client?

I had a client that was having their reception at a Vietnamese restaurant and it wasn’t the most visually attractive location but I was confident that we could turn this venue into a dream location for this couple. They were skeptical that it could be transformed but had complete confidence in the vision I had presented them with. In the end they gave rave reviews and said that I created their version of a “Platinum Wedding”. It was one of the highlights of my career.

What is your current favorite color combination?

I’m obsessed with gray in any combination. With coral, yellow, teal you name it, it’s stunning!

Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?

A trend that I think will never go away but I would love to see toned done a bit is DIY (Do-it-Yourself) projects. Primarily because I believe it puts a lot of stress on couples. In some cases a considerable amount of money is saved but the unfortunate thing is it causes avoidable stress and countless hours that really could be used spending time with loved ones focusing on other day to day responsibilities etc. There are small projects that I encourage and I think are manageable for clients that are really set on channeling Martha Stewart. ;-)
