1. Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

My journey as a Wedding Planner began in 1998 when I was a junior in college at the University of Washington in Seattle (Go Dawgs!). I took an Entrepreneur class and our professor taught us how to write a business plan, and we could choose any business – so I decided that focusing on Wedding Planning would be super fun! Writing that business plan was truly the first step that sparked my journey that lead me where I am today! After I graduated, I went into the Human Resources field and worked for a variety of companies including Starbucks and Accenture. While I loved HR, I knew that someday I definitely wanted to pursue Wedding Planning as a career. So, I took on a part-time job at my church in Seattle (First Presbyterian) as a Day-Of Coordinator – I discovered that I loved working with brides, so I started a Company on the side while I still had my full-time job. I was eventually blessed to be able to take my Company full-time and pursue my dream of being a true entrepreneur – thus, Sweet Pea Events was born! In 2008, my family and I moved to Dallas to take on a new adventure, so Sarah Gai now runs our Seattle office.

2. What’s your favorite part of the job?

Overall, I love the strategy that comes with being an entrepreneur – training and mentoring other Planners is one of my favorite parts about what I do.  I started somewhere and I truly am passionate about educating and helping others to be successful.  On the day of the wedding, I absolutely love the ceremony because to me, the symbolism of marriage is so special and is really what the wedding is all about! I just love watching the groom see his bride for the first time! I also have so much fun watching the bride and groom’s eyes light up as I show them their reception venue for the first time, all decorated how they envisioned – it’s so fun to see all of their plans come together and watch how their wedding design has come to life!

3. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?

Don’t compare yourself, as hard as that can be.  It can be so disappointing to constantly be watching other Planners book tons of brides while you are struggling to just book one.  Take your time, invest in your business, invest in people, and be genuine…and with a lot of hard work and passion you too will be just as successful.  I spent too much time initially trying to be like other Planners, instead of being myself.  Now I have realized that’s why people book me – for me. :)

4. What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?

I have a 3 year old little guy named Carson and love spending time with him and my husband, Chris.  I love playing tennis, traveling, wine tasting, and enjoying time with friends and family.

5. Any great stories from working with a client?

Yes! Too many to choose from…but one recent story that I love is that one of our grooms wrote to the Queen of England and invited her to their wedding (unknown to the bride) and received a letter back from the Queen congratulating them on their wedding (the Bride is obsessed with Royal Weddings).  :) So, the Groom surprised his Bride with this sweet letter on her wedding day and needless to say she was shocked, and happy tears were flowing!  Such a sweet gesture on his part!

6. What is your current favorite color combination?

I am loving cobalt blue paired with honeysuckle/corals – such a fresh and vibrant color palette for summer.  Makes me happy.  :)

7. Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?

I LOVE seeing brides that do something different for their bridesmaids attire.  We recently had a bride who had all of her girls choose a cute sundress – they were all different colors/patterns/styles and worked perfectly for her outdoor garden ceremony.  I also love pairing a cute blouse with a skirt and fun jewelry/shoes that are different for each bridesmaid.

One trend I’d love to see left behind are cupcake stands – to me, there are so many other unique ways to showcase desserts and I prefer to create a dessert bar with many yummy options for guests instead of the cupcake stand (that in my opinion has been way overdone).
