Today’s wedding planner interview is with Shelby of The Day’s Design, based in Grand Rapids, MI! Enjoy:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
I love weddings! I am so seriously passionate about romantic and sweet celebrations. I started The Day’s Design with that passion in mind, it’s the heart of what I do. I specialize in event design but also love coordination or creating other little projects that help bring the wedding day to life.
See the rest of the interview after the cut!
The Day’s Design became an official business summer 2012, when I turned my hobby into a career. Previously I interned with another wedding planner, worked in fine dining and catering and was an event planner at a private club in downtown Grand Rapids. It was then I realized I really wanted to work directly with the bride, bring her vision to life and designing fairy tale celebrations.
How did you get into wedding planning?
I answered that a little in question 1, but it definitely something that I knew I wanted to do for awhile. I actually went to school for it, graduating from Grand Valley State University with a BS in Hospitality and Tourism Degree with an emphasis in Event Planning.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
I love the uniqueness that each day brings. No two days or events are alike. I’m constantly meeting new people, brides, vendors and others in the industry. I tingle with excitement each time I hear a new love story and have the opportunity to be a part of a couple’s wedding day. And bringing all the pretty details together has got to be pretty high up on my list!
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?
Research other companies, know the business but stay true to yourself. Don’t do something just because you think you should, even if it is the “industry standard”. Follow
your heart and put into action those dreams that make up the core of your business. Always keep in mind the end goal and the motivation that makes you want to get out of bed each morning. Starting your own business takes lots of hard work and COURAGE, I can’t stress that enough, it’s not as glamorous as it might first appear. But I still love every minute of it!
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
I have a nine month old baby girl, so she keeps me pretty busy (she just started crawling, so watch out!). I have been married 3 years, have a “starter” home (translation – it needs lots of updating!) and a cocker spaniel, so between it all, I’m very busy! But when I can sneak away, it’s always to Northern Michigan, where you can enjoy a littler slower, more relaxed pace of life and I usually stay pretty close to Lake Michigan, which holds the key to my heart!
Any great stories from working with a client?
My clients have all been so wonderful! No great stories, I’d just like to send a little love to each of them!
What is your current favorite color combination?
Right now I really like natural and neutral, pastel colors. They photograph so nicely and keep the event really whimsical and romantic. I also like adding small, unexpected pops of color into those neutral pallets. And then there’s my all time favorite go-to, aqua (or Tiffany Blue, robin’s egg or whatever color you’d like to call it)!!
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
While tradition is great, the infusion of personal style and details into weddings is my favorite. Weddings should be a reflection of your individual style – take cues from your fashion, home decor and favorite colors. It’s an intimate celebration, and I love that couples are making it more about them, renting unique pieces, adding meaningful signage and choosing to wear items that they might actually wear again, inspired from their own wardrobes. I hope we continue to see this modern, vintage and eclectic styling in events.
