Today’s wedding stationer interview is with Stephanie of Stelie Designs, based in Minneapolis, MN! Enjoy:
How did you get started doing wedding invitations?
As long as I can remember, I was always drawing and making cards or party invitations for myself, friends and family. It naturally progressed to wedding invitations for myself then friends started getting married. Five years ago, I was selling a few cards in my etsy shop when I listed a couple wedding invitation designs and was enthralled that strangers wanted to hire me! I LOVE weddings and I LOVE working with brides and grooms. Love between two people is magical and inspiring.
What is your favorite color combination?
Mint is really huge this season, so I love mint with gray, navy, or coral. Although, I still love the vibrancy of hot pink and orange.
What is the most unique invitation you have designed?
While all my invites are custom and unique to each couple. I designed a wedding invitation for a Canadian couple having a wedding in France that incorporated Asian and French personalities and the fact they had a daughter. The final design included Chinese characters, 3 birds, and their initials, as well as all text in French and English in soft pinks, gold and curry. Turned out beautifully and each piece was unique.
Do you have a favorite typeface?
Oh man, I hate to play favorites, I have hundreds in my library that I love. My go to is Geo Sans Light or Century Gothic they are clean, modern and versatile, it can be dressed up or dressed down.
What is the most bizarre request you have received?
Camel save the dates. Yes, camels. It was fitting since they were getting married on a camel farm and we ended up using the grooms own drawing of a camel. I also had a couple request pig wedding invitations. No matter how bizarre, I am excited to make it incredible.
Ampersand or the word “and?”
I’m an ampersand or ” + “ girl but it really depends on the invitations design. Sometimes “and” looks best.
Any advice for brides?
Throw out the rule book. Plan it from your heart and make it personal. If you want to wear pants instead of a traditional dress, go for it! If you want your invitations playful and off the wall, go for it! If you want to stay with tradition, go for it!
Do you offer more than just stationery?
Absolutely, I offer anything wedding related from save the dates to menu’s and everything paper in between. Along with personalized notepads and notecards, art prints, logo and graphic design, business cards, calendars and oh so much more!
