Welcome to our new monthly blog series: PR Tips 101 from Hello Cupcake! We introduced you to Stacy in an interview at the end of June and we were so excited about her new venture that we asked her to be a monthly contributor. This will be a wonderful series, we will all learn from Stacy!
It’s no longer 2005. At that time, when I graduated with a degree in public relations I felt armed to take on the world. Flash forward just a short seven years and you’ll regularly find me at the public library, checking out books that cover topics like online public relations, social media strategies or even, make money off your blog! Public relations in this day in age demands a dramatically different approach – one that was not yet conceived in 2005.
To stay current, YOU need to be flexible and YOU need to adapt to meet the current ways that information is being disseminated.
One of the best ways for people to gather information about your company, see your current work and learn more about your offerings is through a blog. In first starting out, it’s hard to stay motivated because you’ve not yet built up your readership. Here are a few tips to help you get found and get a following!
Learn how to grow your readership after the jump…
First and foremost, you need to give people a good reason to visit your blog. Work on creating an editorial calendar and if you struggle with what to write about, I would advise that you post less frequently and focus on creating posts with good content. Quality over quantity.
2. Connect With People:
One great way to start getting your blog noticed is by commenting on other people’s blogs. Pick 3-5 blogs whose work you admire, or that you would like to work with and comment on those blogs on a regular basis. Be thoughtful with your comments as the point of commenting is to facilitate a genuine conversation. Be sure that your comment includes your blog address!
3. Use Social Media:
Social media is a great way to let people know that you have new content that might be of interest to them. Allowing people to follow you on twitter, or “like” your Facebook page is a low commitment way for them to keep up with your work.
4. Use Keywords:
Keywords are what will help you get found when someone types a search query into Google. Use the same keywords in your title, post and tags. Yes, all three!
By blogging smartly, you’ll make it easy for people to find you and you’ll be able to differentiate yourself from your competition and connect with prospects and clients!
