Today’s wedding planner interview is with Ashley of Ashley Nicole Events, based in South Carolina!
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
Hi! I’m Ashley Russell, the owner of Ashley Nicole Events in Charleston, South Carolina. We are a full service event design and planning company, specializing in wedding of all shapes and sizes. With the support of my amazing husband, I have been able to plan weddings for a little over five years now. I love every minute of it. Being able to sit down with a new couple and help create their personalized wedding is so much fun to me. Then turning those dreams and plans into a reality is what puts the icing on the cake.
How did you get into wedding planning?
I started event planning back in October of 2007. I was a stay at home mom of 2 and needed something to fill my extra time. I decided to dig deep and let my creative side come out, thus birthing an event planning company. I would have never thought it would have succeeded the way it has. It has truly been a blessing to me and my family. Plus I get to watch happy couples on one of the most important days of their lives. It’s so wonderful to see them smile, cry, and laugh together on their wedding day.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
I have two favorite parts. One would be seeing the bride and groom melt as they see each other for the first time. It’s such a sweet moment for them. I’m a sucker for mushiness. Second would be all the details. I am super OCD. Everything has a spot and if it’s not in the right spot, I will notice. My husband always plays around with my things at home, just to get a laugh. He likes to move things intentionally to see how long it takes me to move it back. I want each couple to have their dream wedding and if things are not perfect for them, then I am not doing my job correctly.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?
Know your industry! Know the venues, other planner’s niches, and network with vendors. Plus keep up with what’s in style. No one will be show casing your weddings if they are out of style or out dated. Also, get some schooling. I see “wedding planners” pop up everyday. Most of them do it because they planned their own or helped with a friend’s wedding. It takes so much more than that.
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
Right now it would be getting more fit. I have found that making time to workout has helped with stress and makes life easier for me. Plus with a hubby, two active boys, and a doggie that loves exercise as much as I do, I have to stay active to keep up. I love mud runs, baking, and enjoying a relaxing evening at home watching my favorite shows.
Any great stories from working with a client?
So many to choose from. It’s not really a story, but at almost every wedding, I like to get out on the dance floor with them and do a few line dances. What’s a wedding without the cupid shuffle or the wobble? Plus their friends and family gather in to. Super fun times to remember them.
What is your current favorite color combination?
I have to say I love the grays. Whether it is pewter or silvery gray those would be great base colors to build a nice color palette off of. Throw in some ivories and possible a pop color of burnt orange or navy blue and my mind is flowing with amazing ideas.
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
I really love the freshness of weddings right now. Clean and crisp is refreshing. I would like to see some of the rustic weddings maybe start to fade out. If there are done right, then they are fine, but if it’s a wedding that looks like it just stepped out of a pinterest board, then there needs to be a little intervention.
