Today’s wedding stationer interview is with Tandy of Kartoe — WeddingInviteLove’s most international stationer, all the way from Singapore! Kartoe’s invitations are so luxurious and beautiful, and it’s easy to see why they are one of the top invitation suppliers in Asia.
How did you get started doing wedding invitations?
I started off supplying wedding favors to wedding planners, I would occasionally receive requests for designing matching wedding gift tags and place cards for their clients. Somehow one of the designs caught my new client’s attention and she requested me to design an entire range of wedding stationery for her, from her wedding invitation cards, program booklets to menu cards. I received tons of compliments from her guests which encouraged me to drop my wedding favors business to start my very own wedding stationery business.
What is your favorite color combination?
I love dark and bold colors like burgundy and black, which are normally perceived as inauspicious colors for happy occasions. However with the right combinations and great designs, they can really blow you away. I like to use metallic colors such as gold on my stationery too.
What is the most unique invitation you have designed?
This is a very tough one as all of my clients deserve a mention for their inputs during the creative process. But If I have to choose one, there is this very interesting client who will be getting hitched at a zoo, they wanted me to create something whimsical, gothic and yet elegant. I drew a lot of inspirations from Tim Burton’s movies and I came up with a cage-like sleeve to hold the wedding invitation card, the sleeve features scrambled alphabets that are laser cut. The wedding invitation card was printed on a black and sparkling designer paper with holographic gold foil and white foil, the back of the card is a show stealer, it features blind-embossed leopard prints on a matte gold designer paper.
This entire concept and visuals are carried into their other wedding stationery, such as a laser-cut elephant place cards that are made of acrylic and table numbers mounted with faux leopard fur.
Do you have a favorite typeface?
I love working with Serif fonts and I’m a huge fan of Mrs. Eaves typeface, traditionally classy.
What is the most bizarre request you have received?
We love bizarre designs and ideas, but nothing compares to bizarre deadlines!! A client requested us to produce her wedding stationery within 3 days and that was merely few days before the Christmas, unfortunately we had to turn her down and refuse the job altogether.
Ampersand or the word “and?”
I personally like to spell things out, including numbers and dates, especially when writing for wedding invitations, accurate and readable information is crucial! You do not want your guests to read an ampersand as letter “s”, but there are times when an ampersand can come in handy especially if the content is lengthy and you need to make the most out of every single space.
Any advice for brides?
I always love to tell my couples not to underestimate the timeline proposed by the designers. Never ever plan your wedding in the last minute, everything can be costlier than usual. Say, for wedding invitation card design, most designers will incur rushed fee and for last-minute shoppers also may run into risks of product shortage. This is also applicable to wedding invites, you will never know when your favorite materials will run out of stocks. Plan well and you will have a stress-free wedding and more opportunities to work on different creative possibilities too!
Do you offer more than just stationery?
Our core business mainly focuses on wedding stationery and other fine stationery for corporate clientele and individuals. However, we do get a few requests to do corporate branding that comprises of designing corporate stationery and websites.
We are slowly extending out service beyond stationery designs to website designs and paintings. Wedding couples can engage us to design their wedding website that is equipped with RSVP and guestbook system too.
