Today’s makeup artist interview is with Korrine Claxton of Korrine’s Facial and Waxing Studio, based in Bonney Lake, Washington! Enjoy:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

I have been a licensed esthetician in WA state since 2007. I wanted more control over my schedule so I started my own business in 2011 and am loving every minute of it. I specialize in makeup, skin care and waxing.

How did you get into the business?

I started out as a freelance makeup artist for a talent agency in Kent and came to the realization that I love everything about skincare. It is such a diverse and expanding field and I’m really excited to be a part of it. There is nothing better than making people feel good about themselves.

What’s your favorite part of the job?

I would have to say that the best part of my job is getting to do bridal makeup. I love being an important part of a bride’s day.
Seeing the joy on their faces when they see themselves all done and in their wedding dress makes me so happy.

If you could pick one unique product or service offering, which would be your favorite, and why?

I love doing facials for people with acneic skin. Acne can cause a lot of anxiety, stress and it is really disheartening to see  people suffer from it. I think that one of the best most unique things about my job is that I can help control it.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to others just getting started in your field?

Always be prepared for anything. You can never have enough products in your kit. You will be doing makeup for different skin types, ethnicities and ages and you need makeup that covers everything. Learn what ingredients and products will work with mature skin, dry skin and sensitive skin. Product knowledge is key.

What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?

I love spending time with my family when I’m not working. My husband and I have two children ages one and two and we love taking them on adventures. It is amazing to see the world through their little eyes.

Any great stories from working with a client?

I have had the best clients but one in particular that sticks out is a bride from this year. She gave me a compact mirror for a gift and honestly her bridal party was just the best. I loved being apart of her day and she really made me feel like I was apart of the party.

What makes you different from others in your field?

I’m a licensed esthetician and I think that having that knowledge about the skin really makes me different from other makeup artists in my field. I understand product knowledge and what ingredients are harmful for our skin. I also understand what  products to use on people who are suffering from certain skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea and acne. I also have the ability to do facials on my clients to get their skin perfect for their wedding day.

Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?

I am really loving “strobing” or highlighting as I like to call it. It seems like makeup is shifting from the heavy contouring that was popular in the past and going to a more natural and softer look.

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning their big day?

My tip would be to figure out what is the most important thing for you and your fiance’ and splurge a little on that one thing. If looking your best is most important to you, then hire a great makeup artist and hair stylist. If food is the direction you want to go than hire your favorite caterer. You don’t want to look at your wedding day and wish that you had done something differently.
