How did you get into wedding florals?
Back in college, I worked at a local flower stand in Santa Barbara, CA and fell in love with making bouquets. Each customer was unique and wanted something different and I really enjoyed being able to create something special for them. Soon after college, a lot of my friends were getting married and asked me to do their wedding flowers. Then friends of friends, and other referrals starting contacting me about doing their wedding flowers so I made it official and my business was born.
What is your favorite part about being a florist?
I truly love everything about being a florist! Being able to create the bouquets is always one of my favorite parts though. There’s nothing quite like seeing the excitement on a bride’s face when you are handing them their wedding bouquet. It makes all of the hard work worth it to know that it is exactly what they had hoped for.
What is your favorite flower and / or style (modern, classic, natural, glam) and why?
I really love all flowers, but garden roses, dahlias, and ranunculus definitely top the list. Garden roses are so romantic, and have such a wonderful fragrance that just makes me happy. I love the colors and varieties, and everything about them! Dahlias come in so many amazing colors and styles, and I think they are gorgeous in every way. And ranunculus are so simple and classic, I think they look their best when they are fully open and the petals are almost translucent. They are also grown right here in Carlsbad, CA so I’m lucky to be able to get them fresh from the farm when they’re in season.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding florists just getting started?
I’ve learned to be flexible more than anything. There are always going to be surprises along the way, especially when it comes to weddings. In order to be successful in this industry, you have to be flexible and adapt quickly to anything that comes up.
What are you favorite trends when it comes to wedding flowers?
This definitely changes constantly, but at the moment, I am loving the natural, wildflower style bouquets using heritage and rustic blooms. I love the how they are a little imperfect but still romantically elegant.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are ordering their wedding flowers?
Make sure you connect with your florist and that they are on the same page as you are. More than anything we want to capture your vision and make your big day as beautiful as possible. We want it to be better than what you could have imagined. So if we are missing something, just let us know.
