Today’s interview is with Boston based wedding photographer Nicole Baas of Nicole Baas Photography! Enjoy:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company
My name is Nicole Baas and I’m a New England wedding photographer, based out of Boston, MA. I’ve been in business for 5 years and I do this job because I’ve always been completely amazed by the human connection. The idea that a couple is made up of two people that found something in the other, unmatched by any other human they’ve met is incredible; that they were able to find that one single person on earth that makes them happy and drives them to be better and stronger, wows me. I work tirelessly to create images that capture that connection and warmth and emotion.

How did you get into wedding photography?
I’ve always loved art and photography; I used to develop black and white film in my high school’s darkroom and moved into digital photography after college. I shot a friend’s wedding while I was working in advertising and everyone loved the images, so I pursued it on the side until I went full-time a couple of years later. And now it has all come full circle, as I shoot both film and digital in all of my work. I’m still partial to black and white film, as I think it can convey an emotion so well without the distraction of color tones.
What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?
Going out during the golden hour with just the couple is my favorite part of each wedding day. Documenting the sincerity of the love between two people is beautiful and it helps when they’re alone for a few moments, just celebrating with each other, and chatting about how the day has progressed. The golden hour light is so gorgeous and helps to produce meaningful, emotional and evocative images.
What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?
When one groom became overwhelmingly stressed on his wedding day, he didn’t want to do any posed photos with his bride. Thankfully, his friends started joking with him about how he was “hangry” and he pulled it together long enough for me to grab a few beautiful images of the couple.
What is your favorite venue and why?
My favorite venue, thus far, has been the Willowdale Estate because it has a lovely “in the woods” vibe and the staff is so well-aligned that all events go off without any hiccups.
Nikon or Canon?
Canon (and Contax 645 and Rolleiflex 2.8f and Fuji X Pro 1)
What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?
My dream location to shoot a wedding would be the Faroe Islands or really any other part of Denmark. Mainland Denmark has such beautiful and clean architecture and design at every turn, and the landscape of the Faroe Islands is incredibly unique and unspoiled.
If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?
Elvis and Priscilla, because they were both so beautiful and cool in that moment and I think that they could make some really intimate portraits. In the future, I’d love to photograph Taylor Swift…she definitely seems like a natural in front of the camera and her style is constantly evolving, which I love.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?
Find your voice, and document what moves you. Use the internet for inspiration but don’t let it get you down. Everyone has to start somewhere and the greatest photographers on the internet are also the greatest storytellers; we all have a few bad images, we just don’t share them. And, obviously, you have to be constantly shooting and learning to make any change. If you work for it, success will come.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to hire a photographer to cover their big day?
Look for a photographer that has an aesthetic that will coincide with who you are and how you would like the story of your love to be told.
