Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
My name is Poe and I started working within the wedding industry designing wedding albums & editing photos for clients. I finally started my own wedding photography business in 2013, where I specialize in a candid & contemporary style of wedding photography.

How did you get into wedding photography?
My interest in wedding photography began very early! When I was a little girl my father was a wedding photographer & videographer; he would have me help carry equipment for some of his weddings. Photography certainly peaked my interest from those early moments & it always remained a hobby throughout my teen years.
What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?
My absolute favorite part of the wedding day is the big reveal of the bride, whether it is during the ceremony or before. Everyone is excited & full of emotion! There is nothing that will match that first look of the groom looking at the bride!
What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?
I had an awkward moment on the job when I was getting to the brides house for her getting-ready shots. There was a dog barking near the door and I was too afraid to get close to actually ring the door bell. I was very lucky that a bridesmaid was late and made her way to the door without fear, wondering why I was standing there.
What is your favorite venue and why?
My favorite venue is the Firehouse Chicago. It has such a unique & rustic charm to it that looks lovely in the summer time. The vines that trail on the side of the building, near the outdoor ceremony space, are just dreamy in photographs!
Nikon or Canon?
I shoot with a Canon. I could go into many technical reasons, but both cameras have very competitive offerings within their professional line, and in the end everything boils down to preference.
What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?
I would love to take photos of a wedding in Greece. The ocean views & ancient ruins would make for such a gorgeous backdrop for a bride & groom wedding series. Even the roadways add a rustic charm!
If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?
I would have loved to be the photographer for Nat King Cole & Maria Hawkins. I can only imagine how amazing it would have been had I been awarded the privilege of taking their wedding photos back then! Looking back their wedding was very classic & dapper.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that being a wedding photographer is a new journey every day! It’s a part of what makes the job very exciting. While I would love to plan for every possible instance, a big part of my growth was realizing that sometimes unpredictable things happen & it becomes more about how you are able to adjust to the changes.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to hire a photographer to cover their big day?
Couples looking for a photographer should find someone they are compatible with stylistically. It’s very easy to shop around by looking at prices & blogs but the most important thing is that your vision aligns with the photographer of your choosing. The entire process should be very smooth sailing & that’s a good indication that you’ve found your perfect wedding photographer!
